POLL: Liberals Still Overwhelmingly Back Obama - 85% job approval, 88% support health care reform.
Edited on Tue Aug-10-10 10:11 AM by jefferson_dem
Liberals Still Overwhelmingly Back Obama

With the White House slamming liberal critics in an interview, a forthcoming Public Policy Polling survey shows that 85% of liberals actually approve of the job President Obama is doing to 12% disapproving. In addition, 88% support his health care plan looking back with only 7% opposed.

"Not only are those numbers good, but they're steady. Obama's favor with liberals hasn't been on the decline. In May his approval with liberals was 87/10. In February it was 81/15. In November it was 87/4. Even as his ratings have declined overall he's stayed in that sort of mid-80s range with liberal voters."

7. DUers do not necessarily represent liberals. Neither do bloggers.
As is kind of self-evident from this poll. Grossly overrepresented here on the intertubes are the small and terminally pissed off wing of the party that thinks anything less than being a left-wing equivalent of Bush, running roughshod over the law to accomplish our own ends, is selling out.

34. Damned straight. Someone here recently said they wanted Obama to take extraordinary powers...
... just until the crisis is over. Really -- dictatorial powers. Like having a Bush of our very own. urk

16. Since you are so dissatisfied with every single thing they do
why are you still a member of the party? Why don't you find someone who earns your vote and work for them instead?

It is amazing how a minority demands the majority to march to their tune in lockstep obedience to everything they want. People who refuse to compromise need to stay out of politics. Or try having your own party and see if you can keep that together. I doubt it, since compromise and working with others if off the table.

They're the ones who are in danger of staying home because they haven't seen enough change--which is exactly what the Rethugs want.

15. the professional left is irrelevant
Let's stop reacting to their orders to be obeyed and their constant carping, and get on with winning elections and making good policy. Why do we even argue with their demands for perfection and their demands that they get to call the shots? They are not the only ones that campaign and contribute - in fact it is unlikely they ever did anything - that is just their lie to try to extort obedience.

40. I don't think I would have used the term "professional left"
But I know what Gibbs meant. There's a small cadre of people who think that anything other than a British-style national health system is a corporatist sell-out. These same people want to ban firearms and the internal combustion engine. They want to disband the military and set up re-education camps for Wall Street brokers.

I exaggerate a little, but not a lot.

Just as not every Republican (and not ever conservative) is a raving Michelle Bachman-style nutjob, not ever liberal is a Jane Hamsher. They have their extremists, and we have ours. And not to put too fine a point on this, look what the rise of the lunatic right has done to the Republican Party. Now that they're being defined by their fringe elements, they're virtually assured of electoral defeat.

There are some people (including me) who will NOT allow this to happen to the Democratic Party.

18. That's what Gibbs meant when he said
That outside of Washington, Liberals and grassroots organization are fully behind the president and appreciate what he does. The "Professional Left" is the cables and some blogger, who will never be happy with Obama. And that is just the truth.

26. What "message"?
Was a household survey of "liberals" taken? Did the poll interview a bunch of people at DLC headquarters ("Oh, I'm a liberal! I can answer your questions!")

Demonstrate to all of us here the legitimacy of this poll's methodology. If you can do so, then you're in a position to defend the "message".

30. Are you being deliberately obtuse?
Ask questions that respondents answer.
Ask respondents what they self-identify as politically.
MATHEMAGIC any 6th grader is capable of.

Or do you think they looked in the phone book for liberal seeming last names?

37. Whenever people feel the need to trot out this bogus old saw- an astute person thinks: desperation
The problem is with the dynamics- and Poli's know this from their own internal polling. The disappointed -the no longer enthused who were on the cynicism fence or got involved for the first time won't be volunteering again- won't be donating or helping with GOTV.

They'll be staying home- (and yet when asked yes or no- will still say, oh well, I generally support).

And really, why should they?

The administration and the Senate "leadership" has blurred the contrast between the parties yet again- in many cases not even put up a fight before abandoning their supporters' key issues and "reaching across the aisle" to those who oppose their supporters' interests. And LOL- like the scorpion & frog tale attributed to Aesop- their own

Rather than harnessing the populist anger and resentment- from the comfort of the country clubs it's been said- even in these harsh times for Americans: "hey, gotta be pragmatic"- which I think anyone with a lick of sense in their heads knows is a *wink wink* to K Street.

Getting back to the Desperation/Confidence scale: Confidence isn't indicated through persistent need for reinforcement; nor would one expect to find it among a group that has a need to beat constituents and constituencies over the head like petty bullies- with repeated OP's like this one.

The opposite is.
