Melancon launches first TV ad in La. Senate race
In a sign the U.S. Senate race is intensifying, Democrat Charlie Melancon will launch his first television ad Tuesday, only days before early voting begins for the Aug. 28 primary.

The 30-second ad, provided to The Associated Press, is the first television spot by a candidate in the Senate race.

Melancon starts with a direct hit at the incumbent Republican senator, saying, "David Vitter hasn't been honest with Louisiana, and I don't expect anything different when he talks about my record. So, I want you to hear it straight from me, what I stand for."

Talking directly to the camera, Melancon describes himself as "a pro-life, pro-gun, Louisiana Democrat" who is willing to work with anyone, regardless of party "if it's the right thing to do for Louisiana."
