Why are there no ads that try to give a historic perspective?
In the 1920s Hoover cut taxes dramatically and kept government small. Add to that the facts that labor unions were weak, wages were low, legalized discrimination made the wages of blacks even lower, and child labor was legal. But, nonetheless those policies ultimately led to the Great Depression. Doesn't that seem like something worth pointing out to those who favor Republican policies?

In 1937, Roosevelt, succumbed to Republican pressure and cut the federal budget and the country went into another recession (saved 2 years later by deficit spending for WWII).

The Republicans at least need to explain why things would be different this time.

It's so seldom that politicians draw on history in their ads. Is it because no one cares that much about history? Is it because history doesn't fit into a 3 word soundbite? Or is it something else?

The lessons of American history tend to favors the liberals, so it puzzles me why there is almost no effort to put today's problems in a historical context. Any ideas?

1. The problem here is that that same history has a habit of biting both sides.
Things are a lot easier with the reality challenged black/white reality of the party of NO because they make their own reality.
Non-conservatives, being more in tune with reality, can usually see in advance at least several alternatives, including the bite-back.

2. People tell me they aren't Dems or Pubs
I ask them to consider this:

What party created SS and Medicare, supports unions and individual freedoms?

And which party is constantly fighting against SS, Medicare, unions and individual freedoms?

3. The consultants and people who actually craft the ads...

... don't know the history themselves?

They don't understand the history?

They think the consumer attention span is too short or that the consumer can't or won't understand a historical argument?

I'm just spit-balling here. I truly don't know why; but its an excellent question.

4. Out of curiosity, why would anyone bother to unrecommend this thread?

I don't mind at all, but I am curious to know why it went from 6 recs to 3 recs. It doesn't strike me as an incendiary topic. Is there something I'm not seeing? Or do you think there are trolls trying to mess with the system?

5. We haven't learned the lessons of our most recent history.
If we need to learn lessons about deregulation, unchecked spending on wars and the effects of tax cuts, we only need look to our most recent past. They take different lessons from the same set of facts.

The don't credit FDR's New Deal with bringing us out of depression. Rather, they claim that his measures prolonged the hard times. It's true. I heard it on the radio.
