Axelrod, speaking to reporter Michael Sneed of the Chicago Sun-Times, also reveals that chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, who is also expected to leave to run for mayor of Chicago, has reached out to a lot of people to discuss the decision, including the founder of a Facebook page set up to support Emanuel's possible candidacy.
"There are a series of senior presidential advisers, and I think you'll find David in that role sooner than later ... before I go," Axelrod tells the Chicago native Sneed while munching on crackers and low-fat peanut butter.
