Obama taps ex-Palin aide to oversee natgas project

WASHINGTON/ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday nominated Larry Persily, a veteran Alaska policy maker and former aide to former Governor Sarah Palin, to oversee plans for a massive, long-desired Alaska natural gas pipeline.

Persily, a former Alaska journalist, worked for more than a decade on oil and gas issues for three Alaska governors, including Palin, who was John McCain's running mate on the Republican ticket that lost to Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in the 2008 presidential election.

Persily, currently is a resource specialist for the Alaska legislature, became a vocal critic of Palin after leaving her office. He famously likened her to Argentine icon Eva Peron.

Pesily's appointment as federal coordinator of the Office of Alaska Natural Gas Transportation Projects was lauded by several Alaska officials.

"Larry is, in my opinion, the single most qualified person in America to take that position," said state Rep. Mike Hawker, co-chairman of the state House Finance Committee and Persily's current boss.

Just as the PhRMA "deal", it also looks like Big Oil is also welcomed at the White House.

Obama Administration OKs Oil Drilling in Arctic off Alaska

WASHINGTON -- The Interior Department today gave the go-ahead for Shell Oil to begin drilling three exploratory wells in the Chukchi Sea, a move that opens the door for production in a new region of the Arctic.

WASHINGTON -- The Interior Department today gave the go-ahead for Shell Oil to begin drilling three exploratory wells in the Chukchi Sea, a move that opens the door for production in a new region of the Arctic.

"This is progress," said Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, the top Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. "Today's announcement from the MMS is an encouraging sign that Alaska's oil and natural gas resources can continue to play a major role in America's energy security."

The Interior Department's Minerals Management Service signed off on a plan that allows Shell to drill up to three exploration wells during the July-to-October open-water drilling season. The company's proposal calls for using one drill ship, one ice management vessel, an ice-class anchor-handling vessel and oil spill response vessels, the Interior Department said. The closest proposed drill site is more than 60 miles to shore and about 80 miles from Wainwright.

"Our approval of Shell's plan is conditioned on close monitoring of Shell's activities to ensure that they are conducted in a safe and environmentally responsible manner," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said today in a statement announcing his decision. "These wells will allow the department to develop additional information and to evaluate the feasibility of future development in the Chukchi Sea.

Shell, Conoco Phillips and other companies last year paid more than $2 billion for leases in the Chukchi Sea off the northwest coast of Alaska. The companies and state officials believe the offshore reserves could power the Alaska economy for decades.

He plucks a former Palin associate who's an actual expert on the pipeline that Palin never shuts up about, but constantly misrepresents. Puts this person in a position where he can actually make something happen with the pipeline, and as the actual facts become known, further embarrass the Caribou barbie.

Classic Obama chess move.

11. This isn't about the Pentagon
...and really, I'm in general agreement with you on the Bushco holdovers. Gates, McChrystal, Bernanke, Geitner, et al should have been shown the door on Day 1. I don't have faith that this administration is in alignment with reality on many things, especially as they relate to defense and finance.

But this appointment shows the potential of being politically smart as well as beneficial to the actual project. Obama is capable of this, we've seen it over and over.

As for Dana Perino, I think he put in her in that spot precisely because she is so stupid. She's already proven that in just the short time she's been in place.

13. Persily: Palin = Eva Peron
One thing that was not excerpted from the Reuters article:

"Persily, currently is a resource specialist for the Alaska legislature, became a vocal critic of Palin after leaving her office. He famously likened her to Argentine icon Eva Peron."

Also, Sen. Begich (D-Alaska) supported this appointment. And,Persily served three administrations, not just Palin's.

30. "She's not qualified, she doesn't have the judgment..."
"She's not qualified, she doesn't have the judgment, to be next in line to the president of the United States,'' Larry Persily, who until June worked in the governor's Washington office as a congressional liaison, said in a phone interview yesterday.

Along with everything else people have said in this thread about him working for 3 governors, not just Palin.

47. Hey Guys, must read posts he made in Sept 2008 on Palin in the Huffington Post - he is on our side
Edited on Wed Dec-09-09 06:57 PM by karynnj
This is one of the best things I have seen taking Palin's energy claims and completely demolishing them:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/larry-persily/palin-only-repeating-conv_b_125197.html

He also critiqued her gubernatorial debate prior to debating Biden (the link to the Alaskan paper no longer works), but from the beginning you can get the picture.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/larry-persily/2006-gubernatorial-debate_b_131078.html

This is NOT a Palin fan, Beglish recommended him, and he likely will be outstanding refuting any Palin statements.

Here's the announcement from the White House about Persily's appointment:

"Larry Persily has worked for more than a decade on oil and gas issues for three Alaska governors and the Alaska State Legislature. Mr. Persily currently is an aide handling oil and gas issues for to Alaska State House Finance Committee Co-Chair Mike Hawker. Mr. Persily previously served as Deputy Commissioner at the Alaska Department of Revenue until 2003 and returned in 2004 to assist the state and North Slope oil and gas producers with developing a natural gas pipeline to serve North American consumers. He later worked in the Office of the Governor of Alaska in Washington, D.C., assisting with oil and gas, Arctic, commerce, transportation and tax issues. Mr. Persily has represented the state at oil and gas conferences and presented on Alaska oil and gas and fiscal issues. Mr. Persily is known statewide for his bipartisan credentials — he has worked for Democrats and Republicans — and his knowledge on oil and gas matters, particularly the history of the 40-year effort to develop a North Slope natural gas pipeline. Mr. Persily served as editor of the Department of Revenue’s 2002 report, "State Financial Participation in an Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline." Mr. Persily earned a B.A. from Purdue University."

Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, released this statement: "With more than 30 years experience in Alaska and more than a decade working on oil and gas issues for three governors, Larry is an excellent choice for this important position. Few people can match his depth of knowledge and history on Alaska oil and gas issues.
"From his work in the news business, the legislative branch, the executive branch, and with various governmental agencies, Larry is known statewide for his bipartisan credentials and his wealth of experience working toward developing a natural gas pipeline to serve Alaska and other North American consumers.
"Larry has been a presenter on Alaska oil and gas and financial issues throughout Alaska, Washington and Norway. He served as the editor of the Department of Revenue’s 2002 report, ‘State Financial Participation in an Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline,’ and has consulted on energy and fiscal issues for the University of Alaska Institute for Social and Economic Research.

52. In the context of Alaska, he is someone that both Democrats and
Republicans trust. Even Beglish is pro Oil. You would be hard pressed to find anyone in Alaska who isn't. The point is this is not a Palin person.

Maybe he could appoint Kucinich here? That would work.

if it conflicts with your desire to attack Obama, you dont even consider it.

57. Horrors! He's a "vocal" Palin critic and "famously likened her to Argentine icon Eva Peron." Oh no!
Edited on Wed Dec-09-09 07:16 PM by ClarkUSA
:sarcasm:

He has the experience to do the job and he's not a slave to partisan GOP teabaggers. Both are to his credit.
It sounds like a good appointment, unless you're a bitter 24/7 Obama Outrage Club member.

60. Guilt by association
All persons who worked for Palin in any capacity should be doomed to hellfire. In fact, Alaska elected her. Kick that state out of the union!

No, this is not "defending Palin." This is saying each individual should be judged on their merits, not on the McCarthyish guilt by association method.

61. Persily's all right.
He readily admits that SP was in no way qualified to be VP and has come out rather negatively against her within the past year.

He is qualified for this job.

72. Some guy named Andrew Halcro thinks he is a good
choice.

http://www.andrewhalcro.com/larry_persily_time_to_bring_in_the_closer

"Persily's lengthy experience in oil and gas issues along with his intimate knowledge of Alaska's natural gas pipeline makes him not just the top choice, but the only choice. His former roles both in government finance along with a stint as the state's oil & gas guy in D.C. and his years in the publishing industry covering Alaska's oil & gas issues make him eminently qualified.

In appointing Persily, President Obama will get a coordinator who is smart, honest and not afraid to speak his mind about the true progress of Alaska's next economic great hope.

It was Persily, in his role as the former editorial page editor of the Anchorage Daily News who warned of delays ahead if former governor Sarah Palin's AGIA pipeline strategy was passed into law."

80. If he's the most qualified for the position, then GOOD JOB!
Glad that again, the president I voted for looks at a persons resume through the lens of qualifications vs. partisian politics like the last president.

But, no one here at DU remembers how that feels now that the shoes our on our feet.. everyone wants us to do the same things the republicans did now that we have the power.

Good Job Obama - if Larry's the best, then you made the right choice.
