Some interesting takes on the double life of Juan Williams

For Juan Williams aficionados over the years, his early NPR days before he decided to go to Fox News were indeed something to be admired for the most part. He was Alan Colmes with a darker skin... wholly ineffective and treated as a oddity when simmering in the Fox News soup.

What did Juan say that got him fired by NPR?

“I mean, look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. You know the kind of books I’ve written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.”

As you saw him drift when he joined Fox News from his earlier NPR days, there is a disappointing trail that he decided to go:

For NPR, Juan Williams is obliged to come across as a dispassionate, vaguely liberal, always reasonable conveyor of Beltway bromides -- a David Broder in black face, if you will.

But on shows like Fox News Sunday, he's expected to be a little more animated. In that relentlessly conservative environment, shouting at Bill Kristol and Brit Hume is the only way to get a point across. Even so, Mr. Williams always manages to stay to the right of panelist and fellow NPR analyst Mara Liasson.

There has been an ongoing assessment of Williams before his recent statements about being paranoid about Muslims who were on planes he travelled on:

Almost any black person who shows up on FOX with any frequency is labeled a turncoat or tool, kissing up to a network seen as neglectful of black interests, a network seen as insensitive, indifferent or even racist.

Before he became a favorite FOX News whipping boy, Williams was that accomplished journalist mentioned above. He regularly appears on National Public Radio as a correspondent and writes for The Washington Post.

This is not to say that Juan Williams is a bad guy. He's proven to be moved by Obama's rise (after attacking him for his Reverend Wright links) and for pointing out the Tea Party as a bunch of zombies, but his willingness to take money from Fox News and be willing stooge for Fox News' agenda has made him rather tainted as an NPR reporter.

The funniest part about those making noise about William's firing with NPR probably never even listen to NPR.

for the wingnuts on Faux News.

Hey Juan: you racist mutherfucker, replace "I'm so scared of Muslims" with "I'm so scared of black people."

You set this entire movement to eradicate racism back 100 years!!!

If a white man had said about black people what you said about Muslims, he'd be fired and deservedly so. You deserved to be fired!!!

That's what you get for being an Uncle Tom for Bill O'LIElly! DISGUSTING!!! :puke::puke:

11. Huh? Williams has been a right wing asshat for a very long time.

12. Sad... pathetic little man...
Whenever I'd see Williams on television, he was just sad.
There was no conviction, no strength in his opinions,
and that's what they were. Where was his sense of
decency and moral authority? Not with Fox.

When you go on the propaganda network, and express
'opinions' that support those losers,
you have no credibility as a journalist.

Sad, pathetic man.

The fact that he so easily jumped ship,
criticized the organization that lifted him to
prominance, and then eagerly signed with Fox
showed where his loyalties lie. I know there
are credible journalists saying that NPR was wrong,
but I believe they'd just had enough; many a time
I wondered why they stayed with him...

Even Rick Sanchez didn't blast CNN, nor did he
run to the embrace of Fox.. well, not yet anyway.

14. Williams has played Uncle Tom for Fux for years while drawing
a paycheck from NPR. He as a convenient 'uber-conservative liberal', always ready to give a hand to the latest RW/Fux meme. His speciality was playing Step'n'Fetchit for Billy O'Loofah, particularly when Billy's massive ego was out of joint. His latest bon mot was just the latest example of that. Unfortunately for him, NPR decided that they were up to here with Juan and gave him his walking papers. Fortunately for him (leaving aside any issues of pride) it represented getting a big 'Attaboy', couple with a 3yr, $2MM contract from Fux. He thought he could play both sides of the street and get away with it and it finally caught up with him. I don't feel sorry in the slightest for him. He is now where he most properly belongs, taking care of Massa over at Fux.

15. When Williams was doing NPR, I would shut it off or go to
another station. I had very little, I any, respect for the man.

I do not find him exceptionally intelligent, a man w/an passion an he spent most of his times lofting softballs that could be hit in a Little League game.; for an infield homer every time.

The duality of his NPR/FOX stints ere bothersome, but I don't watch FOX, so I have little to say there. What is amusing to an extent is that he showed up during the "NPR Rephrase" under bush. There was a relatively sudden "religion" segmentation that showed up during those years. It was always there, but not to the point where it went. Slowly, NPR began creeping to the Right. Under the tutelage of a bush goon, the idea was to change NPR into a RW squawk box. The changes were subtle, but they were there, and in some cases still are. NPR goes into depth with a lot of it's stories, most news doesn't...lately,it has moved to a a more "mainstream" situation. It's subtle, but it's there.

Yesterday, there was a big "to do" on Limbaugh about "begging for money for NPR. It was bogus, as usual, but the point was made that Limbaugh had to "seek out" sponsors...every 12 minutes it's some stupid shit about the "Sleep Number Bed", (I wonder if the sell any of those things?) On the other hand, with Beck, it's buy gold at inflated prices and the hope gold will continue to rise, (it won't, market forces will drive it down and people will lose hundreds of millions).

Back to Williams though. He was pretty bad at what he did, and can now go wild over an FOX for an extra $2 mil. NPR has the right to terminate anyone's contract, and the sooner they clean out the duds and RW hacks, the netter.

I could not are if Williams lives on Park Place or in a box...he was a lousy journalist and worse "talking head". No one will watch him on FOX, just as Palin isn't seen over there either. I'm sure he feels at home across from O'Reilly.
