I do not think this result is as bad as we think. May be blessing in disguise.

1-We flushed a bunch of bluedogs.

2-We are keeping a decent sized majority in the Senate.

3-The Republicans have to make specific peoposals now that people will not like.

4-Republicans will be accountable as well.

5-If Republicans want to get anything they want, they are going to have to give Obama, like they did Clinton what he wants at least to some degree.

6-This would have been far worse had we lost the Senate. This does not feel near as bad as 1994.

1. I somewhat agree, but
The key assumption here is that the Republicans actually want to change anything. They are going to play up big time the illusion of progress and change by pushing for things like repealing health care which won't happen. When they don't get every tax cut for the wealthy they want then they have the media to scream that Democrats are obstructing and damaging our economy.

They have no plan to solve any problems and they know it. The rotten thing is that the media will let them get away with it, as long as substance is not a requirement. Throw in the the show investigations that will flow out of the house and we'll arrive in 2012 with an even worse economy and the Republican battle cry that Obama is stopping any progress on job creation.

The first test is the debt ceiling. When defense cuts are off the table, you can never close the gap. Eliminating the Department of Education saves $50 billion, which is chump change compared to a $390 billion dollar F35 fighter project. I'm not anti-defense, but when one defense project costs 7 times the amount we spend on education, and over half of income taxes goes to defense, you really can't dent the deficit without looking for waste in the entire budget.
