2. Yes you announce you are ready to compromise
When you know the other side will not, that way you can paint them as the bad guys

8. Would have worked great if the Left had not pounded Obama into the sand for 18 months
The professional left and most of the people on this site is why it was a bloodbath yesterday

12. where on earth did you come up with that billshut?
First, Obama himself demanded that we keep his feet to the fire.
We did NOT grind him down. Rather, we expressed dismay when he tacked hard to the right, giving corporations far more than individuals.
If anyone has been grinding him down, and I agree, there was a group, it would be those who called Obama the worst president in history, those who promised to stop everything to insure he has only one term, and those who called him a liar.

21. The right energized its base, and the left discouraged its base.
Just a fact.

Think about the fact that the GOP base just put the folks who destroyed this economy BACK into power.

Meanwhile, our "base" complained its way to reduced power in less than 2 years.

What we taught the Dems is that they can not count on the "left" ... as a result, they will move right. And so will the GOP.

16. He's been compromising with them for the last two years
What do we have to show for it?

Two of our best Democrats gone, and a chain smoking Oompa Loompa crybaby Speaker of the House for the next two years, that's what. (not to mention the mandatory insurance bill, more power for the Federal Reserve, etc.)

Enough with the compromising already.

19. HCR, finance reform
It would make as much sense to say we should have compromised more.

I mean I hate to say Jesus is wrong, but you're proving even the Son of God doesn't always get it.

20. Those were the two worst compromises of all.
He had the entire country ready to support him on any REAL reform in either of those areas. (We both know the teabagger outrage over health care was all Koch Brothers BS) Instead, he gave more power to the corporations causing the problems, in both cases.

He didn't do that alone of course. Chris Dodd played a huge role in both betrayals. He didn't have to worry about being voted out of office, and I'm sure we will all know which Wall Street criminal organization he's taken a job with, within the next few weeks. Other DLC senators were equally complicit. But the president dropped the ball the minute he allowed Rahm Emanuel and his medicare privatizing brother give him any advice on health care, and shunned an actual DOCTOR (Howard Dean) who was advocating the best common sense solution - a true public option, competing with the insurance companies and thereby forcing them to either clean up their act or go out of the business. That was the logical answer. NOT giving them millions of mandatory customers with no cost controls.

9. Actually, many folks on DU don't get it
I pray that YOU wake up. See post #2.

It's all about painting your opponents as obstructionists, people that are paralyzing the government.

18. No, he didn't say that

But we don't do nuance well here. I would have to paraphrase, but essentially he said this: The country is facing big problems and we will need to work together to get something done. He said this won't be easy ... that both Republicans and Democrats believe in certain basic things that they will not stray from. He said he's not so naive to think that the 2012 politicking won't start right away and interfere with getting something done for the country. He said that while we are all proud Democrats or proud Republicans, we are prouder to be Americans. (Well, he's probably really wrong on that last part, but the sentiment is necessary).

He never said: "I will compromise with you."

He actually said a lot more, and there is a video of it posted. If I find it, I'll come back and add the link.

7. We didn't compromise enough before
Yesterday, the House. That wasn't enough. Ultimate compromise can only come when they have the Senate and White House.
