How'd we get from this...

... to this?

Now Obama will have to demonstrate to his base that he deserves support.

1. Simply stated - because he turned his back on us. That pic is truer than it knows. nt

12. Everytime I see that avatar, I see Obama turning his back on Democrats
Whatever point the avatar tries to make is drowned out by the image it contains.

2. We got to that point because "his base" never gave him a chance
I feel ill saying it, but Rush Limbaugh was right - the Democratic "base" expected a Magic Negro who would fix every problem plaguing the nation in 90 minutes or less. Since he failed to singlehandedly fix everything before the end of January, armed with only the mystical properties of his skin, the "base" decided to abandon him and mutter about letting the Republicans win. Which of course did wonders for showing that there was any support for all the stuff those same voters wanted!

3. Yes, and one-half of a term in, they're crying for a replacement.
And don't bother listing accomplishments, because they're just not enough for some of the most strident complainers.

8. I wonder how burying their miserable heads in the sand is working for them?
This President is working hard for all of us, even those who don't want to hear of his accomplishments.
I feel sorry for them.

6. At risk of revisiting the last primary...
... he wasn't armed by the mystical properties of his skin, but by the vaguely ambiguous messages of hope, optimism and post-partisanship.

We hope we can be the ones from whom we are waiting for change! Or something!

We had unrealistic expectations because he studiously avoided setting any expectations - except winning and stuff.

If the realistic possibility of a primary opponent is what it takes to light a fire under his compromising ass, I'm fer it.

13. Obama walked away from his base
...not the other way around. You cant abandon core Democratic ideals then point fingers when the party doesn't abandon them with you.

23. Except he didn't "abandon" squat
He gave you what he campaigned on. You may have had it in your head that he was going to deliver whatever you were wishing for him to give, but the fact is, in the way our government works, shit does not happen unless the people MAKE IT HAPPEN. Wishing ain't good enough.

16. For the ten-millionth time - it is not the little he as "accomplished" that is the problem.
It is the DIRECTION of his efforts.

More war, bogus health "reform" that is worse than nothing, abandoning/opposing civil rights for all Americans, bailing out Wall Street and the banksters instead of actual people, producing no improvement in financial regulation, approving the use of CHILD SOLDIERS for christ sake, ...

Notice a pattern?

For every relatively-minor Lily Ledbetter law that he did not veto (whoopee), there is a major issue that he has utterly failed on.

He does not work for us, that much is clear. All he does is enable the enemy across the aisle to do more damage and blame it on the socialist Democrats.

How does that help anything?

It has been two years and the US still tortures, still launches drones to kill children half a world away, still runs the prison camp in Cuba, still discriminates against some military personnel, still throws tons of money at the corporate cretins, etc., etc., etc.

The only reason he has the support he does is the intelligent-sounding manner in which he speaks.

But actions are needed. Not words about working with the same enemies that have shit all over him for those two years.

27. Oh, that's pretty simple
Ignore the drawdown of forces in Iraq, while pretending Bush' Afghanistan strategy (ignore it and hope it goes away) was the way to go.

If you can bend your brain sharply enough to accomplish not one but both of these leaps of illogic, then you can understand where T Wolf is coming from.

7. That's what it takes to get votes.
The problem with being a democrat is what it takes to get votes is exactly NOT what it takes to get donations.

10. The problem with being a democrat is that your base is both idealistic and apathetic
They want lots of awesome things, but generally aren't inclined to do much more than say "I want this!"

11. Another good point.
Some just won't go and exercise their right to vote; they need a POSITIVE reason to do it.

Scaring them with the idea of Republican control wasn't enough, some of them said.

And don't even think about admonishing anyone; that's not a smart way to get them to vote for you! Love them, look them in the eye and SAY you're sorry, hug them, make them warm and fuzzy.

Meanwhile, Republicans don't need any of that. They just go and get it back.

14. I don't think we're apathetic.
We would support party leadership which promotes our goals vigorously.

But it's all admittedly kind of hypothetical.

21. Alan Grayson:
Alan Grayson: Easy to explain why I lost

Alan Grayson blames both his defeat and the massive losses that his party suffered nationally on a de-energized Democratic base, the Florida Democrat told Salon this afternoon.

"In my case, it's simply a matter of the Democrats not voting," Grayson, who was defeated by Republican Dan Webster in Florida's 8th District, said. "We don't have the final numbers from Election Day yet, but in the early voting, when you compare the vote this time to the vote in 2008, the Republicans dropped about 20%, and the Democratic vote dropped 60%."

"That wasn't just true in my district; it was true all around Florida, and as far as I can tell all around the country, with the possible exception of the West Coast and New England," he continued. "If Democrats don't vote, then Democrats can't win."

"The enthusiasm gap," Grayson concluded, "became a vote gap."

"If the Republicans show up and vote and many Democrats don't, then the result is a foregone conclusion."

26. But if you ask the 'blame Obama' crowd about why GRAYSON lost, then
the excuse becomes "the Republicans had too much money".

Moving the goalposts.

Grayson alluded to a fact that some people aren't willing to hear: It's ultimately one's own personal responsibility to exercise their right to vote. If they don't, they reap the consequences.

Tell it to the Dems in Grayson's district who couldn't be bothered to send him back to Washington.
