NYT Op-Ed by President Obama :Exporting Our Way to Stability
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/06/opinion/06obama.html?_r=1&hp

AS the United States recovers from this recession, the biggest mistake we could make would be to rebuild our economy on the same pile of debt or the paper profits of financial speculation. We need to rebuild on a new, stronger foundation for economic growth. And part of that foundation involves doing what Americans have always done best: discovering, creating and building products that are sold all over the world.

We want to be known not just for what we consume, but for what we produce. And the more we export abroad, the more jobs we create in America. In fact, every $1 billion we export supports more than 5,000 jobs at home.

It is for this reason that I set a goal of doubling America’s exports in the next five years. To do that, we need to find new customers in new markets for American-made goods. And some of the fastest-growing markets in the world are in Asia, where I’m traveling this week.

(snip)
The great challenge of our time is to make sure that America is ready to compete for the jobs and industries of the future. It can be tempting, in times of economic difficulty, to turn inward, away from trade and commerce with other nations. But in our interconnected world, that is not a path to growth, and that is not a path to jobs. We cannot be shut out of these markets. Our government, together with American businesses and workers, must take steps to promote and sell our goods and services abroad — particularly in Asia. That’s how we’ll create jobs, prosperity and an economy that’s built on a stronger foundation.

8. Never meant to be passed in the Senate. Everyone knew it would be filibustered.
It was an attempt at scoring political points a few weeks before the election, not a serious attempt to actually pass it. It they had wanted to pass it they would have included it in a reconciliation bill at some other time when that was possible.

4. COC as they went about the election passing out money and
running ads.---they were whispering in the GOP Candidates
Ears---We need your help on the Trade Bills. Trade and repealing
Wall St. Reforms were COC serious wants.

I always ask. How many middle class citizens in the Country
who can afford to buy our goods made with more expensive labor??

Comparative Advantage is necessary to have trade agreements
that work for both sides. Too often we have made so many
agreements. Our Companies go over there mfg the product
and send them back here for us to boy. No Comparative Advantage.

Oh well, The Trade Agreements will pass. Jobs??? Jobs??? Jobs???

Globalization Crisis is reason we have so much unemployment.

think he'd be more careful with these nebulous "goals." Where were these concerns when we were hemorrhaging jobs before this last election?

What the hell is the point of signing trade agreements to get more jobs when we're voluntarily outsourcing our own jobs to China and India? I'm sorry, but unless he addresses the outsourcing issue where we're trading away jobs for fattened corporate profits, he is not serious.

7. So, of course
it would be better if he tried nothing, had no goals and maybe just sat in front of a computer monitor complaining and wringing his hands over how nothing works and it's all hopeless.
