Poll question: Should the unemployed and middle class be sacrificed in order to raise taxes on the rich?
It's pretty clear that republicans would block unemployment benefits and middle class tax cuts if the rich don't get their tax cuts.

Many progressives and others on the left would like Obama to stand firm even if it means collateral damage is done to the unemployed and middle class. Obama has stated that he's unwilling to do this.

What do you think? Should the unemployed and the middle class be sacrificed in order to raise taxes on the rich?

2. False dilemma.
There should be other options, such as trying to gain tax break extensions separately from killing the tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires.

3. "Raising taxes on the rich" will help EVERYBODY by not adding that amount
to the deficit.

I've just recently come to that stance after leaning the other way because of the unemployed and those who can't afford an increase.

I'm not sure I've settled yet.

What about you?

6. The makeup of the Senate means that it is an all or nothing problem.
Republicans will not support extension of just the lower 98% of taxes. They have also made it clear that they will let nothing pass through the Senate, and there is nothing we can do about that. They have that power.

We are forced into an all or nothing situation. I'm comfortable with nothing for me, but my mother, sisters, and brother will also be penalized, as well as millions of others.

I think the long term economic implications of passing this bill are severe. The political ramifications between now and 2012 are dire if it is not passed. The media is dominated by simplistic Republican messages that a majority of those who vote will believe.

26. They can have the middle class tax cuts.
The democrats fought those cuts the first time because we couldn't afford them... so I am not sure why they flip flopped on that issue.. so all you have left are the unemployment benefits, which, they know, if they don't extend, it will bring the economy crashing down around them and people will BLAME them.
