Senator Reid, why bring up a cloture vote on the defense bill if you know it won't pass?
It has been reported that if cloture fails today, DADT is dead, and the Republicans have vowed not to do anything before they get their estate and tax cuts for the top 1.5%--those who AGI is over $250,000.

Reid Puts DADT Repeal On Senate Agenda Today
Evan McMorris-Santoro
December 8, 2010, 12:16PM

Harry Reid may attempt to push a repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell onto the Senate floor today, a move that few expect to result in an end to the ban on openly gay servicemembers in the military.

This morning, Reid announced on the Senate floor that a push for cloture on the defense spending bill that includes a repeal of DADT could happen as early as this afternoon.

"I'm likely going to move to my motion to reconsider on the defense authorization act this evening," Reid told his colleagues. Reid said details on the vote -- which he said will include "time for amendments," the key for some possible Republican votes on repeal -- will be forthcoming.

But most already think the cloture vote will be largely symbolic, and is destined to fail.

"It won't happen," one Republican aide told NBC News.

Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC) told reporters on Capitol Hill today that Reid is making the wrong move bringing the cloture vote.

One "Democratic staffer familiar with talks over the bill" told National Journal that the cloture vote's expected failure could mean DADT is dropped off the 2010 agenda altogether. A failed cloture vote "may pave the way for quick action on a 'stripped down,' defense authorization bill" without the repeal language attached.

1. Cloture opens debate, right? Why would this fail? It's not a vote for
the authorization itself.

2. Because Republicans have the power to do that and no downside...
for doing it.

Reid wants people to see who the obstructionists are. Make them pull the trigger rather than just wave the gun around. He also wants to force Republicans to effectivly vote no on a defense bill.

8. Will there be 60 votes anytime between now and the end of...
the lame duck session? I don't see it.

It is clear that Republicans can and will obstruct whatever they damn well please, and DADT pleases them. It will not pass by itself. The best shot is to call Republican's bluff on denying the defense authorization bill.

Is it necessary to pass the defense authorization bill? That is one I can't answer.

But I think that if Republicans are going to make a threat, we should make them pull the trigger. Whether it fails now or Christmas eve doesn't matter.

In the past, I preferred to see this handled by congress. But I now see that the best avenue is probably the courts.

3. Cloture ends debate so that a floor vote can be taken to vote it up or down.

7. Senate definitely needs to end the filibuster to take up a bill for discussion and amendments!

Requiring 60 votes to take up a bill is a recipe for not getting much done--and it has worked well for the Republican obstructors!

6. This is beginning to sound like an already
written script. What I have never understood about gay rights is why someone has never said Gays and Lesbians are human beings as much as the heterosexuals. And for the religious who think there is a God and he made them why do they think God made a mistake when creating Gays. According to them God doesn't make mistakes. What do they think All men are created equal means? It is, when you get down to it, they want to believe that they, themselves, are gods. Gays are being persecuted just like blacks were for so many many years. And why should it be up to Congress and the Senate to pass laws outlawing anything but marriage between a man and woman? Well, I suppose this has all been rhetorical but I had to get it off my chest. I suppose my thoughts are too simple for Republicans and dumb Democrats to understand. We will all next year be told what to do by Orangeman and Turtleman.

9. Turtleman is acting like he'll be in charge next year, but he won't--not yet.
I totally agree with your thoughts about gays and lesbians. I think Jesus would, too. :)

11. This is the very kind of vote....
....held on the middle-class-only tax cut extension.

That didn't have enough votes to gain cloture, either, but it was somehow important to vote anyways, to 'send a message'.
