TPM: DADT Vote Postponed After Collins Hands Reid A Final Offer
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 06:35 PM by flpoljunkie
IS THAT YOUR FINAL ANSWER?

Sen. Susan Collins lays out what she needs to allow DADT repeal to come to a vote. On its face, her demands can probably be met by Harry Reid without too much sweat. That's probably why Reid has now put off tonight's vote.

Now, you could argue that Reid just caved by putting off the vote, but I think that's the wrong read on this.

Collins has finally made her demands concrete and public. And they are not outrageous. At one point she wanted or was said to want two weeks of debate. Now she's asking for a manageable 4 days. Would we have gotten here anyway? Maybe. Did Reid's forcing the issue make the difference? Hard to say for sure, but probably.

This much is clear: the day started with DADT repeal looking completely dead and ends with a very plausible way forward to 60 votes in the Senate in this lame duck session. Not a done deal yet, but prospects for repeal are a whole lot better than they were 12 hours ago.

1. If we are assured of her vote, then I think four days isn't unreasonable.
If we can make this happen, any procedural demands she has are ultimately not going to be remembered.

16. All she is promising is that she will vote to allow debate
Edited on Thu Dec-09-10 09:31 AM by littlewolf
she isn't saying anything on how she will vote once the Bill comes up ...
she wants 4 days of debate and 10 amendments and any Republican can
offer an amendment not just the minority leader ...

edit: for clarity

18. As long as she votes for cloture nothing else matters.
Don't need 60 to pass the damn thing.

2. This is really something....
A soldier with medals on his chest and respect from the men and women he leads gets kicked out of our military when its discovered he`s gay. Republicans are anxious to stand in opposition to gay members serving in the military but have no problem with lying war criminals, AWOL Bush and 5-deferment Cheney. Figure that one out.

3. How can anyone trust her? If she was going to vote for cloture she would know by now. "Lucy" is
adjusting the football to pull it away. She probably has it worked out with Lieberman to yank her vote and then blame it on Obama.

4. I don't think 4 days is unreasonable. We will see what happens, but it certainly a good sign.
This morning DADT was dead and now there will be a vote in 4 days with 3 Repubs saying they will potentially vote yes. Sounds like progress. I'm sure the naysayers on the board will still belittle this
accomplishment if and when it happens.

5. Why would any republican vote for DADT Repeal? They know it is on Obama's agenda and
their goal is to stop him in everything. IMO, they are just playing a dirty game to humiliate Reid and Obama.

15. Because they live in blue states and people have been flooding their office phone lines
with demands to support the repeal.

7. What does she need four days of debate for?
To wait for Reid to get George W. Bush to endorse the measure? To give the fundies in Maine an opportunity to flood her phone line so that she can change her mind at the last minute because she wants to "represent her constituents? what?

9. It is four days to debate amendments to the entire defense bill. DADT is one, DREAM Act another.
Reid offered the Republicans 10 amendments and the Dems will get five amendments.

10. Am I Correct That Once The Vote Starts We Are Home Free
It will just give the Repugs an opportunity to show their ass by showing how homophobic they are...

12. There will be at least two cloture votes.
The big one will on the motion to proceed to debate on the bill, thus far Republicans have not yet even allowed debate to begin on the bill.

Reid will then file for cloture to end debate and move to an up or down vote. If changes made in the House, there would be a cloture vote on the conference report as well.

After cloture is invoked on the motion to proceed, it is doubtful that the bill would fail.

14. And seriously confirms it later...
For those confused -- this is probably good news for DADT repealers.

17. She's just a stalking horse, pretending that she needs more 'time'
so they can run out the clock on DADT. Remember how Olympia Snowe did something similar?
