7. 55 ayes
Didn't Reid vote no in order to keep the bill alive? That would mean the dems need 4 votes to get to 60. Wyden will be one more when he returns, so they'll be fishing for 3.

5. It didn't really have a prayer, unfortunately
Too much "they're taking our jobs" sentiment among tea-bagger types.

8. This was a tougher vote than DADT
The fact is - even with Harkin's support - the DREAM Act is seen as anti-worker and much of organized labor sees it as a betrayal of American workers. Just the way it is.

11. The AFL-CIO, UFCW and the Progressive Caucus view the DREAM Act as pro-worker.
Not such which "much of organized labor" sees it as anti-labor since it is conservatives that battled against the DREAM Act, not liberals.

"The U.S. Senate this morning failed to break a Republican filibuster on the DREAM Act. The 55-41 vote fell five votes short of the 60 needed to break the filibuster.

In a statement last night, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said the AFL-CIO “strongly supports the DREAM Act,” and that today’s vote would “clearly show where each senator stands on the aspirations and values of the immigrant community and all working people.” "

http://blog.aflcio.org/2010/12/18/republicans-shatter-hopes-and-dreams-of-young-immigrants-block-dream-act/

"The unique fabric of American society—hard work, entrepreneurship, loyalty to country, ingenuity and invention—stitched together by generations of immigrants will continue to endure regardless of this disheartening vote. The dreams of young people will not be checked, and the UFCW will continue fight for a broad and bipartisan coalition to restore the American Dream and pass the Dream Act. "

"CPC (Congressional Progressive Caucus) Supports Dream Act"

"This week, the House will consider the DREAM Act, a bill that would help young immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children—immigrants who were raised here, worked hard in school, and then pursued higher education or service in the military—to achieve the American Dream. We strongly urge you to vote YES on the DREAM Act."
