Will Obama protect ANWR?
My answer is no way, especially if Palin wins the GOP nomination. If she wins, it would be classic Obama "chess" to flip on that issue at just the right moment to outmaneuver her on her signature issue. We might even see Obama go up to Alaska and shoot a moose himself!

For people who might say, yes of course Obama will protect ANWR, I would ask why would you think that? What makes you think Obama is committed to ANWR or any other environmental issue?

And commitment is exactly what is required. It took commitment to the environment for the dems to filibuster drilling there under Bush. Polls showed that by far the more popular position was pro-drilling, because the GOP had successfully convinced people that it would lower gas prices and make us not need to import oil from the Middle East anymore. Even on DU, I was reading advice for the dems to bail on ANWR, for pragmatic purposes.

In fact, I can envision the comments on DU praising his "brilliant" outfoxing of Palin if he flips on ANWR. They would resemble very much the comments praising his "brilliant" outfoxing of the GOP on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

2. What bill is before us - how is this an issue now?
Obama has prohibited offshore drilling, too.

7. GOP will try to open up ANWR
and it will especially be an issue in the 2012 election.

A Republican-controlled House will be more likely to approve legislation allowing drilling in ANWR's coastal plain. But even if legislation also passed in the Senate, the president most likely would veto it, Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, said Monday.

"I'll introduce my bill, as usual," Young said. "But the reality is, it's not going to get out of the Senate, and the reality is, Obama's not going to sign it. I'm realistic. I've done this 11 times."

But he said he'll do it again, and with the support of Rep. Fred Upton of Michigan, the top candidate to run the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Upton on Monday stepped into the debate with a letter to the White House. Upton said he agreed the refuge is "truly one of America's greatest wild places." But he argued that changes in technology, including directional drilling, have made it possible to operate safely and responsibly in the refuge.

13. I'm asking a very conventional question
ANWR has been discussed a lot on DU. People care about it (some don't, that's fine). The GOP just took over the House, obviously they are going to try to open up drilling there. It's been an issue in every election in recent memory, obviously it's going to be an issue in 2012. Obama could stop any such attempt with a veto, so asking whether he would or not is an obvious thing to talk about.

People seem to be saying that there's something wrong with discussing this. My guess, people don't want to discuss it because they aren't able to say with any confidence at all that Obama will protect ANWR.
