Obama Signs DADT Repeal Into Law

Obama Signs DADT Repeal Into Law

Rachel Slajda

President Obama this morning signed into law the bill repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

"I am just overwhelmed," Obama said as he took the stage among chants of "Yes we can!" and whoops from the audience. "This is a very good day."

"No longer will our country be denied the service of thousands of patriotic Americans who were forced to leave the military, regardless of their skills, no matter their bravery or their zeal, no matter their years of exemplary performance, because they happen to be gay," he said. "No longer will tens of thousands of Americans in uniform be asked to live a lie."

Obama was joined on stage by Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullen, Sens. Joe Lieberman, Susan Collins and Harry Reid and Reps. Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer and Patrick Murphy, an Iraq War veteran who had pushed for DADT repeal.

"In the coming days, we will begin the process laid out by this law," Obama said, adding that repeal will not go into effect immediately. "It is very important that servicemembers remember that."

He spoke directly to gay soldiers, and said he hoped those discharged under DADT will re-enlist once it is fully repealed.

"There will never be a full accounting of the heroism demonstrated by gay Americans in service to this country," he said. "As the first generation to serve openly in our armed services, you will stand for all those who came before you, and you will serve as role models for all those who will come after you."

1. "it won't begin immediately"? just how long is this process supposed to take? how hard can it be
to say "dadt is no longer in effect, it all stops right now"

3. I've read that it can/will take up to a year
They want to make sure it doesn't affect the cohesiveness in combat troops. I don't know how they're going to figure this out. I'd guess they'll ask for volunteers in several platoons and then study how they're treated.

4. so, what, are they going to pick the platoons with the highest number of reichwing fundies or
something? wasn't this study in cohesiveness supposed to have been done already? wasn't that what the military was supposed to be doing?

7. That's not it. They are putting in place information sessions.

You know a class you take to promote tolerance. Keep in mind that 30% of the military is still against this. They want to make sure they don't have drama without having provided the necessary outlets. You might think this is a non-issue but it can be an issue. So I have no problems with this sort of system implemented. Soldiers are not 100% honorable women in military still get raped and harassed, even though it's been decades. So I would like to see something like this put in place. And that could take up to a year to have all military personnel having attended these sessions. Not to mention there are probably codes of conduct and what not that's going to change. And considering we have troops world wide, we have to make sure we send it out to all of them.

Keep in mind that nothing is 1.2.3, things take time. This is something has been in law for 17 years and has entered in other aspects of military culture that need to be rectified. So to properly implement it their giving it a year. This is why health care reform, in essence is taking almost 10 years. This is why new laws take time to implement. They want the transition easy. It doesn't happen over night.

6. They're putting together info sessions. You know those groups that teach you about something.
Much like troops get information sessions on middle eastern cultures BEFORE going, they are doing the same for LGBT military and non-LGBT military personnel. I don't see anything wrong with this.

14. All they have to do is stop discharging LGBTs
That's all.

This 'implementation' stuff is pure bullshit.

19. Re Obama
It makes me feel so good to know that homosexuals can now kill innocent people in impoverished countries all over the world on behalf of the US government, just like everyone else.
