"U.S. to detail Pentagon savings, cuts"
U.S. to detail Pentagon savings, cuts

WASHINGTON | Mon Jan 3, 2011 8:25pm EST
(Reuters) - Defense Secretary Robert Gates is expected to announce as early as Thursday about $100 billion in savings for the Pentagon and cuts to some weapons programs, sources said on Monday.

The announcement will detail a plan that military services have been hammering out for months. The Pentagon is under increasing pressure to cut its budget given huge federal deficits and a drawdown of troops in Iraq.

One weapons program expected to end is the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, a 40-ton amphibious landing craft being developed for the Marine Corps by General Dynamics Corp, said two sources, who were not authorized to speak on the record.

Gates is also likely to cancel a medium air-to-air missile being developed by Raytheon Co, said defense analyst Loren Thompson, chief operating officer of the Virginia-based Lexington Institute.

Pentagon spokesman Colonel David Lapan declined comment on whether Gates would make the announcement this week, saying only that Gates would announce his decisions on efficiencies at an appropriate time.

3. It's clearly the will of Obama and the Congressional Republicans
Edited on Mon Jan-03-11 11:34 PM by MannyGoldstein
We can only hope their fetish is thwarted.

The military cuts are only 2%-3% of budget. Obama and the Senate Republicans are looking to cut benefits to the average recipient by 25% over time.

9. Ah okay then. So Obama is definitely set to destroy SS. Yet, nothing has been done by him.
As a matter of fact, Obama has enforced more cuts to military spending in order to pay for most things. By the way, may I ask where this plan of Obama's is listed.

10. So you'll have no problem placing a $20 bet, yes?
If Obama doesn't propose cuts or sign them into law, you win. Alternatively, I win.

5. first I've heard about the "MILITARY" portion of the analysis done ...
all I've heard is the constant mantra ("liberally-biased media", of course) that the "sacred cow" of Social Security/Medicaid/Medicare was being slaughtered, over the objections of the "liberals/Democrats". Not a peep about how the plan also called for the military to face cuts, too ...

6. Military cut 2%-3%. Social Security proposed cut is 25% over time.
We paid in, and now they'll pass it to the wealthiest Americans as tax cuts. Great stuff!

7. yes, I know ... those who do hard physical labor, if they're lucky, might
get to have some social security come to them, if they make it to the raised retirement age.

Those who have trust funds and "work" in jobs which have excellent health benefits already, will collect theirs, along with the pensions which probably would make the SS checks they receive appear to be mere pittances ...
