2. John Zogby poll
Only Christie amongst all republicans beats Obama 2012 in this poll.

6. That's because most of the country has not met him
Here's some Jersey history. His only earlier elected office was Morris County freeholder. Morris is so Republican that I don't think we have had a Democratic Freeholder since I moved here in 1972. All 4 are Republicans. Christie won election as a freeholder.

Here, from Wikipedia is how well he "played with others" in a nearly all Republican county:

Christie, at the time a resident of Mendham, was in 1994 elected as a Republican to the Morris County, New Jersey, Board of Chosen Freeholders, with Christie and a running mate having defeated incumbent freeholders in the party primary. After that election, the defeated incumbents filed defamation lawsuits against Christie based on statements made during the primary campaign. Christie had incorrectly stated that the incumbents were under investigation for violating certain local laws. The lawsuit was settled out of court.<7>

As freeholder, Christie required the county government to obtain three quotes from all qualified firms for all contracts. He led a successful effort to bar county officials from accepting gifts from people and firms doing business with the county. He voted to raise the county's open space tax for land preservation; however, county taxes on the whole were decreased by 6.6% during his tenure. He successfully pushed for the dismissal of an architect hired to design a new jail, saying that the architect was costing taxpayers too much money. The architect then sued Christie for defamation over remarks he made about the dismissal.<8>

In 1995, Christie announced a bid for a seat in the New Jersey General Assembly; he and attorney Rick Merkt ran as a ticket against incumbent Assemblyman Anthony Bucco and attorney Michael Patrick Carroll in the Republican primary. Bucco and Carroll, the establishment candidates, defeated the up-and-comers by a wide margin. After this loss, Christie's bid for re-nomination to the freeholder board was unlikely, as unhappy Republicans recruited John J. Murphy to run against Christie in 1997. Murphy defeated Christie in the primary.<9> Murphy, who had falsely accused Christie of having the county pay his legal bills in the architect's lawsuit, was sued by Christie after the election. They settled out of court; nevertheless, Christie's career in Morris County politics was over by 1998.

His behavior has not gotten better as governor.

11. "more than any other politician."
How did you determine that?

There are many politicians with more videos and uploads than Christie.

Also, Barack Obama has a higher approval rating in NJ than does Christie.

20. Absolutely true and they delight in the confrontations
I wonder (and hope) the bullying will backfire. I think it will as he does not show judgment in his choice of whom to bully.

I think his calling a teacher up on stage after the teacher asked a question and then ordering the police to bring him there was appalling. The local paper identified the man humiliated as a lifelong Republican. Now, that man has a circle of people - likely predominately Republican who will be less likely to think well of the governor.

I suspect that Christie will get a strong challenger in 2013 - possibly Cory Booker, who from appearances on TV is incredibly likable and is doing a great job as major of Newark in these tough times. Knowing that could move Christie to flip on running in 2012 as either President or VP. If he wants to do the former, I would guess that he needs to start working on it immediately. Otherwise, like Romney in 2006 he might be better NOT running in 2013, unless he is pretty certain to win.

If Booker runs - I have a feeling we'll be meeting soon. I'd love love love to work on that campaign! Something really telling about us here . . . there were only about 2 million votes cast in that Gov. election. I was half asleep watching the results that night but . . . Gov Dough Boy really does not have this big old mandate to do whatever the heck he wants - and I know enough IndyTeaps sitting around me that are extremely unhappy about the way they voted. It also appears that he's far more popular outside of NJ - than he is inside.

25. I would suspect that many of the DUers from NJ would really want to
help. I would bet that there would be a lot of enthusiasm on our side.

I volunteered in Morristown a few times for Corzine, but I have to admit my heart was not in it. He ran an intentionally negative campaign and it was painful canvassing and phonebanking. Though this was Christie's county, there was no enthusiasm for Christie among the independents I spoke to - there was a lot of dislike for Corzine. Among Democrats, many said that they weren't voting - that they did not like Corzine and did not think he was any better. I tried to argue that his choices of keeping schools whole on aid and expanding healthcare for kids when he cut the budget about 20% showed his values but I doubt I persuaded many. The problem is that Corzine should have run on that - and made those decisions the basis of the campaign.

I agree with you that he is more popular outside NJ - and unfortunately they see him as acting like a regular guy New Jerseyan - which is not true at all. He sounds like he is from the Sopranos not the old money of Mendham!

Here is a letter to the editor from someone from my town who I don't know.

http://www.dailyrecord.com/article/20110105/OPINION02/110103058/1095/OPINION/Governor+should+be+poster+boy+for+bullies

I don't think his behavior will play well for long.

27. You know, you might be right
There was no enthusiasm from him at all. However, if he really did not want to run, there were Democrats who would have - and won.

29. Codey would have been the one I was thinking of
The first time Corzine ran, there were SOOOO many people I called who volunteered that they wished he were running. There was even a poll then showing he would have won by a landslide. Instead, there were questions about Corzine's ex-wife speaking against him. The second time, there were questions of whether the union negotiations were impacted by his relationship with Carla Katz.

Codey was perceived as a good guy and not corrupt.

13. If that's a Zogby Internet poll then it's not considered scientific no matter what Zogby says
Statisticians like Nate Silver have heavily criticized Zogby and their Internet polls for a while now, because they often get results that are different by over 20 points then what the rest of the polls are showing.

Just to be clear though, Nate Silver has found some other Internet polls to be nearly as reliable as traditional over the phone polls, such as YouGov. The big difference between Internet polls like YouGov and Zogby however is that YouGov randomly selects who they want to take their poll and email them a link to the poll, asking them to take it. Zogby on the other hand just posts a poll on the Internet and lets anyone take it, and that's not random.

9. The only thing Christie would beat Obama at is shoving hot dogs down his piehole
The man has not missed a meal. That and he's a hothead who has blown good money and jobs in New Jersey to appeal to his Fox Noise viewers.

14. The more interesting polls are the ones that include a third party run by
Bloomberg. Bloomberg is loved by independents and moderates. The one poll I did see that had a generic Republican vs Obama vs Bloomberg had the Republican winning. Bloomberg drew more votes from moderate Democrats vs moderate Republicans. Independents favored Bloomberg by just a little over the margin of error.

On the bright side for Obama, it was a generic Republican. If Republicans nominate a polarizing figure, say someone like Palin, I would be curious to see how many Republican votes Bloomberg would draw then.

I can't find the poll now, but I would be curious to see a similar poll done now. If I remember correctly, that poll would now be roughly a year old.
