handled the atmosphere well.

23. I only listened to a part of the commentary after the speech, but it didn't seem unfair
My recollection is that Gergen commented that he had been expecting a more solemn event and that it had more of a pep rally or campaign rally feel to it. But he went on to acknowledge that people in Tucson needed to cheer and that while it may have been jarring at first for "traditionalists", the President's words were important and resonated with the audience and will resonate with much of the country.

Quite frankly, I don't see Gergen as being an asshole for those comments. Any number of people here at DU, and some of my friends I emailed with last night had similar reactions. We didn't really know what to expect and thus had to adjust to the particular atmosphere and tenor of the event. While I've been to Tucson a couple of times, I don't really know it and didn't realize how much, in a sense, it is a "college town." Once I understood that context, the tenor of the event made perfect sense to me.

Now maybe Gergen went on and said other things after I stopped watching, so I am only going on what little I saw.

31. He has plenty more comments...
where those came from(HIS ASS!)and I have heard a lot of them. I have posted some of them in the past. I really started noticing it during the run up to the inauguration and it has become even more evident since. Brokaw and others soon could not contain the dislike they have for this adminstration

all that mattered was his wonderful speech.
