Credit to Obama
Edited on Thu Feb-03-11 05:26 PM by Tom Rinaldo
Watching AlJazeer I can't help but notice that the American role in the crisis in Egypt is by and large being reported in positive tones. In a world where conspiracy theories can be fabricated so easily out of thin air, I find that remarkable. There are excellent reasons why Arabs of every stripe can be suspicious of American intentions. We propped up Mubarak for 30 years. But instead I am seeing a bare minimum of cynical speculation regarding America's current role inside Egypt. I am hearing a nuanced understanding of what the U.S. can and can not be expected to do to hasten Mubarak's departure, with little doubt expressed that the Obama Administration is working to make him leave.

It is what is NOT being said about America during this crisis that is so striking. It seems that the advantage of the doubt is being given to Obama that more or less, within the limits of understandable American national interests, he supports the aspirations of the Democracy demonstraters. I can't help but think that the tone and content of AlJazeer reporting concering the United States and Egypt today would be very different today if Gworge W. Bush, or John McCain, were President now. I give credit to Obama, and his team, for this important shift in attitudes.

2. You need to fix the "propped up Obama for 30 years" to
propped up Mubarak for 30 years. Otherwise, good post.

It would qualify as a Glen Beck type theory that the U.S. has propped up Obama for 30 years, lol.

10. Sorry - but I disagree taht Mubarak should be allowed to be there as long as possible
Edited on Thu Feb-03-11 06:06 PM by karynnj
Letting Mubarak say as long as possible runs the risk of his forces making it impossible for anyone but some allied with Mubarak's party to be the new President - leading to no real reforms. It is just wrong to reward Mubarak for sending thugs to create violence. That action likely lost him many people not pushing for him to leave. I agree with his agreement that they could get a caretaker government.

It is ironic that in considering US interests before Egyptian interests could hurt our interests.

Richardson was better.

I think you're saying there are not thousands of Death to the Great Satan and Down with USA signs in the protest. That says a lot and thanks for posting. Despite what many say, we are viewed more favorably around the world with Obama as POTUS.

Could that because he's a secret Muslim??

13. I heard a lady on NPR today
She was in Egypt as a representative of the ACLU on a mission/vacation. Anyway, as the protests started, she was worried, but her group stayed with their itinerary. They were on a bus trip back from somewhere and a group of protesters stopped her bus. When they saw that they were all Americans, they (the protesters) gave them (those on the bus) the peace sign. when the hotel or police line or something wouldn't let the bus through, the protesters yelled and forced them to let the bus carrying mostly American's through the road block. They all went to their rooms and received notes not to leave their hotel rooms. She's in Great Britain now, which is where she gave the phone interview from.

Edited on Thu Feb-03-11 08:52 PM by jeanpalmer
that "the Obama Administration is working to make him leave"? Is he cutting off aid? Is Mubarak leaving? Seems to me he's still there and won't be leaving.
