Dems To GOP After Patriot Act Fail: Welcome To The Big Leagues

Dems To GOP After Patriot Act Fail: Welcome To The Big Leagues

Brian Beutler

On Tuesday night, House Republican leaders suffered an embarrassing setback when members of their own party scuttled an attempt to extend key provisions of the PATRIOT Act. The way it unfolded suggested that the GOP didn't see the rebellion coming -- that they weren't aware that a meaningful chunk of their own party opposed their efforts, and wouldn't have their arms twisted.

The bill required a two-thirds super-majority to pass under rules required to expedite legislation. Leaders thought they had it in the bag. They came up seven votes short.

Under the Democratic leadership of Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer, this rarely happened -- if legislation, including PATRIOT Act reauthorization, came to the floor, it was because they had the votes. And today, Democrats are relishing in Tuesday's mishap.

"I think the Republican leaders have a real challenge," House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told reporters Wednesday morning. "I think their party is divided."

He supports this extension, no?

7. But he does want the Patriot Act extended....
...and the House failed to do that so this can be considered a setback for Obama.

Question for you ProSense, do you support the extension of the Patriot Act?

Do you support the extension of the Patriot Act?

Simple question....

11. I assume you're asking
because you don't know my position on the Patriot Act (even though my opinion has nothing to do with the OP)? Or is this a trick question?

The bill has worked and has been revised. There are still some fixes that need to be made. Some background.

Now, what does my opinion have to do with the OP?

13. Wait
wasn't this a response: "The bill has worked and has been revised."

Or do you think I was suggesting that the bill worked, but needs to be killed?

There are key parts of it that need to be extended, and should be. Other parts need to be fixed, the surveillance and National Security Letters aspects.

14. So you support the extension of certain parts of the Patriot Act, but...
you feel other parts should be fixed.

But Democrats don't stop him.

will eventually pass

The OP is about the lack of coordination between Republicans, but hey let's take this opportunity to advance the bogus Obama is to the "right of Republicans" meme.

Well, back to celebrating the smack down, albeit briefly interrupted.

I like how so many people like to think so, though. It's easier to dislike him of course.

10. This monstrosity needs to die...
Our government should never have gotten the kind of power this placed in in the hands so very few.

We've seen it misused, citizens abused and the potential for civil disaster is at the heart of this noxious "legislation". It is, a recipe for the meltdown of the Democratic Republic we citizens swear we love so much. bush and his bastards had this thing sitting and waiting for a disaster to occur...and then came 9-11which might not have ever happened if they weren't such pompous assholes they rejected, out of hand, what the outgoing Clinton administration had told them was waiting in the wings and the potential for bin-Laden to prepare the strike.

On a scale of 1-10, that error alone comes in at an 11...I despise those jugheads for what they have set this country up for.

32. I thought Democratic principles would be the one thing that would be shared by all DUers.
When a Democratic president veers away from his own party's principles, I find it hard to believe that any true Democrat could stand by him. Continued defense of Obama regardless of what he does against our well-being would suggest a fan-club or a love-is-blind mentality.
