Decency, humility, 'The Very Best of the American Spirit'. No comment.

3. No.
This kind of thing isn't making me happy at all.

How low can we go. Is there no limit to what we will accept? I'm all for civility, but... This stuff if making me feel like I'm fringe or something. I'm not. I just pay attention, and any of the Bushes are not people I would give attention to. "Remarkable" isn't a word I would use unless it was derogatory.

"Beautiful mind" Barbara always struck me as the kind of person who is elitist to the core with a mean streak a mile wide. I'd like to think Obama was just being polite here.

former First Lady a "despicable bitch" (to borrow a phrase from above) during the disposition of his public duties?

Let's be real.

7. Remember her comments about the Katrina victims?
Barbara Bush insults Katrina survivors.

Said today while visiting relief efforts at the Houston Astrodome: "Almost everyone I've talked to said we're going to move to Houston. What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. (Said with concern.) Everybody is so overwhelmed by all the hospitality. And so many of the peoples in the arena here, you know, they're underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."

10. True colors
The areas where Obama is not controlled by political pressures - the areas where he could choose to speak out, and doesn't, and the areas where he doesn't need to speak out, and does - say more about him than any number of speeches ever will.

This is Obama. This is his real sense of values - not what he has to do to get by politically.

17. I have no great respect for GHWB, nor Babs...
but the proper thing to do in a situation like that is to be gracious.

I would not have even considered bush for the honor, but that's not my call. Considering the circumstances, I do not have a problem with PO said, it was courteous on his part, and it's good to see that under circumstances like this he can rise above the fray, I would have been appalled if he had called her an old hag or kicked GHWB from the stage. There are times when diplomacy wins the day, this was one of those times.

The best thing in this situation is that junior didn't receive the MoF...that would have been even more offensive.

He awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to a few people for working for liberal change, including John Lewis, who is a warrior in the field for our side. So it just looks good for him to show that he's willing to honor some Republicans, and people like George H.W. and Barbara Bush are relatively inoffensive choices, despite their objectionable qualities, given that they aren't partisan political players and haven't been for some time. That said, I saw an unfortunate irony in Bush I receiving the Medal along with John Lewis, a hero on civil rights. Bush, after all, ran for Senate in 1964 (losing to incumbent Ralph Yarborough, an honest-to-goodness Texas liberal and the only Southern Democratic senator to vote for CRA 1964) as an unabashed Goldwaterite and opponent of the Civil Rights Act. Bob Dole, who voted for all the civil rights legislation of the 1960s, would have been more fit to stand alongside Lewis, but he had already been awarded the Medal by Bill Clinton.
