Obama pledges cuts in entitlement programs
By Patrick Martin
16 February 2011

At a press conference the day after releasing his budget for the 2012 fiscal year, President Obama declared his intention to carry out major cuts in entitlement programs as part of a deficit reduction program to be negotiated with congressional Republicans.

The press conference was dominated by critical questions that reflected the right-wing consensus of the corporate-controlled media. Reporter after reporter suggested that the budget contained too little in the way of spending cuts and failed even to mention “entitlement reform”—the official Washington code words for cutting pensions and health care for the elderly and the poor.

Not a single question was asked about military spending, the largest single item in the budget—at least until 2016, when interest payments on the federal deficit are projected to exceed the Pentagon’s share of total spending. There was no suggestion that the gargantuan military budget, larger than the combined military spending of all other nations on earth, was unaffordable or “one of the real drivers of long-term debt,” as one reporter described Social Security and Medicare.

Obama was in his preferred political environment—defending right-wing policies against criticism from even more right-wing critics. He emphasized that his budget provided “tough choices” and inflicted “real pain” on working people who deserved better, as though these were positive features.

We need a media that will shed more light on these facts. The corporate-controlled media is doing the American people a tremendous disservice. They fight for the wealthy.

18. The MSM sure like to give the straight facts to the public. Don't they?
I do wish there was a way to automatically identify articles on websites that is based on facts. And identify journalists that twist facts around until it turns into a pretzel.

The Obama budget: truth or dare

President Obama held a press conference on Tuesday, defending his $3.7 trillion budget (and his handling of the Egyptian uprising) and taking a few shots at the impatience of the Washington press corps, who want to see a deal with Republicans done yesterday. After all, they’re on deadline, and what could be better than a dramatic bid to cut Social Security? Still, of all the storylines surrounding the budget, there are three important ones that stand out to me, mostly because they’re kind of misleading.

So what are the budget storylines that seem just off base?
snip
1. The Obama budget “goes after students, minorities, and the poor”
snip
2. It doesn’t go far enough to cut the deficit
ship
3. It “punts” on entitlements

edited to add: This article seems to rebut most of the angst. I know I felt different and better after I read more than just the screaming headlines.

10. WTF
where do they get their info from? Interest payments exceeding $600 billion in 2016? how can anyone believe that number- that would mean debt payments would more than triple in about 4 years. and military spending is not the single largest part of the budget- SS is followed by pentagon which is followed closely by medicare (any idiot with access to google can see that) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_budget_(United_States)

17. WSWS is about as credible as The Onion
Actually, I think The Onion's satire is probably closer to the truth in almost all cases and is always more amusing (Not that the WSWS can't be unintentionally hilarious, but still...).

You're not alone. A lot of people prefer that method for news consumption.
