Thune Will Not Run For President

An early favorite bites the dust. "t this time, I feel that I am best positioned to fight for America's future here in the trenches of the United States Senate," reads a statement from John Thune (R-SD) who was once thought to be considering a run for the presidency in 2012.

You can read his entire statement below the fold.

This will come as particularly disappointing news to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who had encouraged him to run, and to New York Times columnist David Brooks, who shortly after President Obama was elected gushed "he is tall (6 feet 4 inches), tanned (in a prairie, sun-chapped sort of way) and handsome (John McCain jokes that if he had Thune's face he'd be president right now). If you wanted a Republican with the same general body type and athletic grace as Barack Obama, you'd pick Thune."

Thune was always going to have a tough time in the GOP primary field, particularly vis-a-vis his 2008 vote for TARP.

9. not so sure about that but...
.... was NOT looking forward to the prospect of him being on the stage with the President in a debate. We like to claim we vote based on what the candidate SAYS but appearance is a HUGE factor. I did not savor the idea of Obama having to look UP to anyone. So now, from a purely aesthetic view (again, not the ONLY factor but a big one) there is no equal.

Nothin' but a bunch of weird lookin white people.

.... and I'm gonna behave and NOT post the shirtless pic of him in HI. Now, recent reports say that Christie has lost some weight. Whatever the reason (he says it's for his kids) good for him.


Christie would pose a threat .... but so would Rubio. But both of them seem smart enough not to run.

He's effectively pro-choice with restrictions, he supports the "Ground Zero" mosque, he supports civil unions for those darn' homosexuals and is a staunch advocate of NJ's gun control laws.

He needs to spend the next four years losing weight and getting himself on TV with his somewhat more moderate GOP agenda if he ever wants to be President. Right now, once his positions seep out in the wider consciousness of the Republican primary voter, well, he's fucked, frankly.

29. Agreed. In the Northeast it is hard to be elected governor without those social positions.
It does not translate well in the rest of the Repub party however. Christie has horrible positions on economics but socially he is nearly the same as my liberal governor here in Connecticut.

4. He's tested the waters and knows he can't win against Obama
He'll wait for 2016 and run without the stain of a loss on his record. It will be interesting to see how he positions himself between now and then.

He's definitely one to watch on that side.

22. The goopers are sure taking their time to announce. They don't want
to have to be out there actually taking positions on all the hard issues and world events. Primaries are less than a year away, though. If they don't start stepping up, there won't be anyone for Obama to beat. lol.

What really counts in the primaries is the skill of your political operation. If Barbour is serious, he could be the best at actually campaigning.

Of course, he's also the worst general election candidate next to Palin...
