Michelle Obama deserves praise, Huckabee says (Childhood Obesity)
Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Bachmann and other powerful Republican voices have bashed the anti-obesity campaign that first lady Michelle Obama has launched as a case of government overreach.

But count among her defenders former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, now leading the field of prospective Republican 2012 contenders in a new Gallup Poll. (See OnPolitics item.)

He says some Republicans have criticized the campaign, focused on childhood obesity, "because she's the one presenting it."

"She's been criticized. . . out of a reflex rather than out of a thoughtful expression," Huckabee said at a session with reporters hosted by The Christian Science Monitor. "It's exactly what Republicans say they believe, which is you put an emphasis on personal responsibility. . . . I thought that's what we were about.

"I think we should be thanking her and praising her."

Don't want to see him as president, but good for Huckabee on this!

1. Bye Bye Nomination
If he even inches upward in the polls, his opponents will start running attack ads showing his face next to the First Lady's, with devastating results (among likely repuke primary voters, at any rate).

2. That's it - he can't run now. There's no room for common decency on the right.

Wonder if he's going to find out just how nasty his party is now?

4. He probably already knows.
I see Huckaby as a Republican Jimmy Carter. (No disparagement to Jimmy Carter). I just watched the PBS Special about Carter today, and I see these similarities: both Southern governors, not part of the Washington crowd, sort of outsiders because of their Southern traditional values; Carter had very high ideals, and had the best of intentions for the country, but, he didn't know how to play the game, and never satisfied the liberal wing of his party. He was really pretty conservative, and pushed for fiscal discipline, cutting social programs, etc., and earned the ire of Kennedy and his followers.

I think Huckaby would have the same problem with his base, the crazy Tea Partiers. He wouldn't know how to play with Boener and McConnell, and the Wall Street Crowd. It was an anomaly that Carter was nominated and elected. I don't think Huckaby will get that far. He's perhaps conservative enough, but not mean enough, and his knowledge of foreign policy seems to be nil, likewise with fiscal policy.

7. ".....out of a reflex rather than out of a thoughtful expression"
He nailed it exactly when it comes to talking about Republican attacks on President Obama and/or his wife. I wouldn't ever want him to be POTUS (or to even have a shot at it) but he occasionally seems like a decent guy.

15. Agreed, he's kooky, but he does seem like decent guy as long as, you know, your not gay or anything

20. Don't get me wrong
I'm not really supporting him, especially not his views on gays, but, unlike most conservatives, he's capable of at least a little bit of introspection and sanity once in a while and I feel like we need to point it out and nurture that whenever we see some signs of it in prominent Republicans. Maybe, eventually, more Republicans will see it as being desirable.......maybe.

9. Sometimes I really like Mike
Most times not, but occasionally he acts like a decent human being - unlike the rest of his party.

10. The Huckster is a walking contradiction
His political views are not rational, but he appears to be a likeable person with a good sense of humor. Well, at least he'd choose a good running mate!

12. Huckabee is a class act
I disagree with him on nearly everything, but he is at least an honest man and doesn't parrot the right wing hate talk.

16. Because of his own personal history, no doubt
Republicans will put any principle aside (if you can call hatred a principle) if they will benefit from it personally.

19. He's not an idiot...
He knows that Independent voters dispise the partisianship bashing that Palin, Rush & Bachman have been doing - especially about this issue. This is a grab for the middle, without ailianating many on the right.. because really, who is "OPPOSED" to fighting childhood obsiety?

Frankly, this just makes him look sane.. it was a smart move on his part, and he knows it.
