Thank you Gov Walker you have done something I never thought I'd see happen in this family
I've been trying for years to get my husband and son involved in politics since they are in trade unions but never could.
Well what Scott Walker has done FINALLY woke them up, for the first time EVER they went to a rally. We were at the state capital yesterday for the WeAreWi rally . Never ever thought I'd live to see the day. He keeps asking me for updates on Wisconsin.

If any good comes out of this fight I hope one of the things is the fact that the GOP may have over played their hand on this. This fight has finally pierced through the wall nonpolitical people have had up and they now realized what's at stake.

I just pray this is happening across the country.

For every rabid tea-partier there must be 5 never-paid-attention-ers in this country.
Thanks for posting this. This is something I've been watching for.

22. Here in red-state East TN, I think there are a lot of GOP voting union people who may
finally be waking up.

One said to me, "Well, they can't do that to us. We've got a contract."

I explained that they can break the contract. He looked dumbfounded.

We have a lot of GOP voting teachers here and I understand that a few of them have made calls to our Dem party leadership wanting to know if the Democrats will support their bargaining rights because the GOP legislature (which they voted into power) is introducing bills to break teachers union contracts.

They're astounded. How could these legislators attack them?

Sigh.

4. I can appreciate how you feel -- my husband is on board now, too
He'll watch MSNBC, but he likes hearing about politics in small doses. He's always been a Democrat, though, so there's no need to convince him how high the stakes are. He's really interested in the Wisconsin goings-on.

Have you read this letter from a former conservative prison guard, posted by k-pete? I think Walker has converted quite a few who haven't been paying attention:

5. That letter is a jaw-dropper. The guard expresses the workers'
position so well.

The baggers can't get past the word "tax". They look at as though it's a punishment, an evil invention of the liberals, and seem to have no concept that We The People pay for EVERYTHING in this country, just like we do in our own homes.

This guy is to be commended. Send him a pizza! :hi:

12. It began when they couldn't think about where taxes go beyond "welfare".
It's now reached the point where they resent paying any taxes at all, thanks to all the greedy corporations feeding their hatred. I think what surprises me the most is their contempt for teachers! That's just way over the top of rational thinking.

17. You have a good point
Your point brought to mind another talking point they use of 'my family has to balance their budget so should the government'. Of course, they ignore the idea that if the family as a whole is in bad financial shape everybody has to pitch in to make sure the bills are paid and there is food on the table. Gee, isn't that what the American people are the big family and through taxes we make sure the 'household' stays together and has what they need. Modern day conservatives do not believe in any kind of social contract that requires citizens to contribute for the betterment of society as a whole. The conservatives just believe in the law of the jungle and as long as they have theirs (or at least they will someday because they are Republicans) they don't give a damn about anybody else.

37. And the 'baggers think their position is just like the Revolutionaries': tax revolt
But the American Revolution wasn't a protest against taxation, it was a protest against taxation without representation.

Then again, we shouldn't expect the Teabaggers to undertake that big a mental exercise.

23. I had life time 2 republican friends "wakeup" after Bush II that then turned
Democrat for 2008 and beyond but this govmnt worker/union thing is another fish net for dems to catch a whole lot more folks who are waking up to the truth about what repugs are really working for

I am glad Obama is at the side lines and not in it = as that would give the other side an excuse to say a lot of crap to the unenlightened and tie it to him ; when it is really about the working class not government or Obama

Not even really political outlook when you think about it except one side is all made up of wealthy people & corp$$$ and they are the republicans.

Not all fundies are wealthy but they will probably be strung along due to beliefs, also any gun lovers, gay haters or racists of any economic line, the clueless stupids who vote based on latest TV scandal or rumor type made up crap or who is cutest /safest, Fox zombies ...other than them what part of the current working class would support them??

That letter represents alot of whats out there now in hearts and minds being changed

31. If Obama had lead the fight for rights when people first became
aware of the recession. If he had not compromised all too much of what Democrats stand for, you would not be saying you are glad Obama is on the side lines.

It is very sad that Obama is on the sidelines. He and the rest of the Democratic Party should be leading the struggle for the rights of working people and the middle class and the poor. It's absolutely shameful that he is not way out front.

But considering that he lacks credibility when it comes to defending the rights of the poor and middle class, maybe you are right.

This is not how it should be. But maybe this is how it is.

7. sad but true, he always votes D but never wanted to hear about
politics. I think because it just makes him so mad and angry he shut it out. He has health issues and hearing all this stuff about what they we're doing wasn't doing him any good health wise. But that all changed when Scott Walker staring going after collective bargaining rights and unions in general. He was so nonpolitical he didn't even know what a tea bagger was. I told him when we were leaving not to confront them when we got to rally and he looked at me and asked "Whats a Tea Bagger?" He's come a long way since yesterday's rally, when he saw them in person.

10. That's what I've been thinking.
Even if DU believes that Obama basically lost his chance. The mere fact that Republicans in each state are trying to fuck over the people, this being Unions..the Union people will revolt and will vote Dem, even if normally they are not Dem or have issues with Obama, or try to avoid politics. And the think is that unions exist in ALL states not just one or two. So I think the Dems have basically been handed the political wins for this year and next year.

I have seen very little of that since the 60s, which was the era of VietNam and Civil Rights.

Since that time, I have known only a few people at any given time who had any inyerest in politics, government or current events.

I hope that changes.

29. The Dems in 2008 UNDERREACHED!
The people wanted much more progressive legislation and policy, but the Repubs and Blue Dog Dems put up obstacles, and the Obama administration didn't fight hard enough for truly progressive legislation. Nor did Obama push for much truly progressive policy at the executive level.

So we ended up with a ehalthcare reform bill that is essentially a Republican bill that rewards private insurance companies rather than the single-payer bill we needed. We are still pouring money and blood into Afghanistan--only faster. Gitmo is still a blot on our reputation--and so on and so on.

40. Get Real
I too wanted more progressive policies during the last 2 years, but after watching all that happened, can't you see this is not an easy game to play?

The repubs view this as a war. "We the people" have not realized this. I think with all that has happened in Wisconsin and across the country, maybe working folks will finally wake up and see that the repubs are not on your side and never will be. So stop looking at elections as Guns, God and Gays because the repubs just laugh at the dumb dumbs who think this is what it is about.

The repubs are destroying our country, because we let them do so. Blaming the Dems is way too simple and way too easy.

44. Yeah, by electing a Black man President.

I know a few former Democrats who turned apeshit Republican because of that. Some weren't too surprising. Some were. I guess there is a difference between believing that Blacks should be treated fairly and believing they are actually equal or can be trusted in positions of authority.
