Congress and the declaring of war
Correct me if I'm wrong, but ever since World War II, no US President has sought the approval of Congress before initiating war right? So why are Americans on facebook so uptight about Obama not asking for congressional approval before starting Odyssey Dawn? Did they amke the same noise whne Clinton started the NATO war in the Balkans? Bush whne he invaded Iraq? (As in both Bushes) Truman in Korea? Kennedy and Johnson in Vietnam?

1. Because Americans on Facebook are spending too much time on Facebook...
.... and not enough time reading the paper. (even if it's a digital one)

2. Quick answer: Yes.
Americans *did* have their nappies in a knot over Clinton's not seeking Congressional approval.

Americans *also* had their nappies in a knot over whether or not what Congress had already passed constituted sufficient language to approve a war.

What you have to understand is that "Americans" doesn't mean *all* Americans. It means a group of Americans, a group that's different when it came to Clinton and Kosovo on the one hand and * and Iraq on the other. There was overlap, Constitutional purists or anti-war folk of whatever political strip, that opposed both. There were a lot of (D) who supported Clinton but didn't support * and a lot of (R) who supported * but not Clinton.

The same holds true for Obama. There are lots of Americans who support him. It's a mistake to take a vocal subgroup for the entirety of the population.

"Americans on Facebook are uptight about Obama's not asking for Congressional approval" allows either the interpretation that *all* Americans on Facebook are uptight or just some Americans on Facebook are uptight. The only reasonable interpretation is tht *some* American on Facebook are uptight. If you don't like dealing with them, find another subgroup to focus on.

3. I understand
But look at the White House fan page. It is no longer a fan page--by Facebook definition--but a bitching page where people hurl curses and illogical comments at the President, the Administration and each other.

4. It was before my time, so I could be wrong, but I have heard
that quite a few people were a mite upset about the Vietnam War.

Something about a national anti-war movement or something.
