MI POLL: Snyder approval at 33 / 50.
Snyder quickly falls out of favor

Over the last few weeks we've found that voters in Ohio and Wisconsin have quickly soured on their new Republican Governors, John Kasich and Scott Walker respectively. But Michigan's Rick Snyder wasn't like Kasich and Walker. He campaigned as a moderate and won by 18 points in a state bluer than either Ohio or Wisconsin while his counterparts were just squeaking by in their races. You would think that even if Snyder's popularity has fallen after two months in office it hasn't fallen as far as Kasich and Walker's.

Think again. Snyder actually now has the worst numbers of this new trio of GOP Governors, with only 33% of voters approving of him to 50% who disapprove. And despite his overwhelming victory last fall voters now say that if they could do it over they'd pick Virg Bernero over Snyder by a 47-45 margin. Snyder's current status is definitely emblematic of the adage that the higher you climb the farther you fall.

What's happened to Snyder? What made him such a formidable candidate last fall was incredibly strong support from independents and an unusual amount of crossover appeal to Democrats. Neither of those things has lasted. His approval with independents is now just 32% with more of them at 44% disapproving. That's a remarkable drop given that our final poll of the race last fall found him leading by 40 points with those voters. He's also down to just a 10% approval with Democratic voters. If there's any silver lining in his numbers it's that he does maintain strong support within his own party- 68% of Republicans approve of him to 13% disapproving.

Snyder's ability to win big in a blue state was due to his successfully presenting himself to the voters as a centrist but he's lost that image with a lot of folks over the last few months. In September we found 46% of voters in the state thought Snyder was 'about right' ideologically to only 26% who thought he was 'too conservative.' Now those numbers are basically tied with 37% judging him about right and 36% too conservative.

1. He has been spinning the voters' rejection of him.
He says things like "I knew they would try to recall me if I signed the EFM bill." He tries to portray himself as a person making the tough calls to benefit the state, like he's some kind of hero. His policies will not benefit the state, only his right-wing corporate benefactors. He gave himself dictatorial powers to appoint an unelected manager of HIS choosing to be paid whatever HE wants who can step in wherever HE wants and declare any city in default. He can then fire everyone, declare all contracts null and void and presumably sell off any municipal assets to the highest bidder. My guess is the eventual target will be the Great Lakes. The last repug governor we had tried to do it, but was stopped.

4. He's Worse--a Libertarian Tea Bagger
Stealth candidate. On the other hand, I don't know what people were thinking---well, yes I do, but I don't know WHY they were thinking:

They were thinking that a rich venture capitalist and his wealthy capitalist buddies would come to the rescue of a labor state! And then the electorate rejected the REAL labor hero to put this vulture capitalist in the governor's mansion!

Talk about buying the sizzle! As if a vulture capitalist gives a fig for people over profits...

5. Maybe, but there isn't much to be done about it
He's not running for re-election for 3.5 years. By that time the state will be broke and be a theocracy and have many Dem-leaning areas under martial law.

6. I hope that people are learning that no one can believe anything...
a republicon candidate says when they are running. They are lying and will follow the corporate policy no matter what they say when running. There is no such thing as a moderate republicon anymore. They have been purged from the party.

The corps decided that since they won in these states by lying that they would take the chance of ramming through the "free market" legislation they have been preparing for years, for just this chance. I'm sure that there is still more repressive legislation out there in ALEC's little hands just waiting a chance to see the light of day.

9. Because he is doing great harm.
He and his pals in the lege are in for a nasty surprise next year. They are really motivating people to get out there and work against them.

11. Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin.
Three Midwest states that skewed HEAVILY Regressive in 2010 and are quickly showing signs of severe buyers' remorse.

Seems to me that the places where the teabaggers made their biggest gains are going to be where they suffer their heaviest losses this time around.
