Blue Falcon Birther LTC Terry Lakin is returning home Saturday
Edited on Fri May-13-11 07:09 AM by Hokie
Birther Colonel returns home Saturday

Lt. Col. Terry Lakin, who refused to obey lawful orders on the belief that President Obama had taken office illegitimately, will be returning to Baltimore on Saturday from his incarceration in military prison. For refusing to obey orders, Lakin lost his pay and benefits, and was given a punitive dismissal from the service -- the officer's equivalent of a dishonorable discharge.

Some people, even non-birthers, have blamed President Obama for Lakin's incarceration. The president, they argue, did not release his "long-form" birth certificate in a fashion timely enough to convince Lakin not to flush his career down the toilet.

This is nonsense. What would we do if large numbers of our military followed Lakin's example -- decided that orders are optional, until and unless the government produces evidence debunking whatever conspiracy theory they happen to believe? To begin with, we would have already lost all of the wars we are currently involved in. We couldn't even have a military if enough people behaved like Lakin.

His story is a very sad one, of a man who is probably quite decent being ruined by his own gullibility. I hope his family isn't ruined. But don't make him into some kind of hero. You can blame president Obama for a lot of things, but not for this man's voluntary failure to do his duty.

The Birther blogs have been pushing this and want to get a big turnout for him at the Southwest baggage claim area at BWI Saturday morning at 10:30 AM.

2. I think hundreds with signs reading "SUCKER!"
would be appropriate... maybe along with some rotten lemons.

5. God. Dear Birther Freakazoids: It's over. In fact, it never began. And this man, of all people,
is the least deserving of anyone's support. Give it up.

6. Baltimore, you have my condolences.
Lakin is from Greeley, Colorado, and his parents still live here. Our loss is your, well, loss.

"Whew!" for my neighborhood.

8. I love Maryland because it is a state that always does the right thing and its liberal and freedom
reins. I am willing to bet this guy is going to run for office.

7. Well lets hope there is a big opposite welcome committee. I bet they would
feel very different had this been Bush. They would have said throw the bum in jail. I think this guy got what was deserved. I would have felt the same had it been Bush. If you want to make political hay then you will have to answer for your deeds. I feel strongly no matter who is president soldiers have to obey the commander-in-chief. I come from a long line of service men all who happened to retire from the military and all are democrats. All of them said they may not like the commander-in-chief but it is their duty to follow the orders.

9. What's really goofy about Lakin supporters is they have two songs:
Edited on Fri May-13-11 12:02 PM by jberryhill

1. If Obama had released his BC, then Lakin wouldn't be in jail. Obama is therefore responsible for Lakin's situation.

This argument fails to recognize several facts. First, that Obama HAD released his BC back in 2008, in the manner that the State of HI provides them. The recently-released document is not a standard issue form, but was only obtained by special arrangement with HI to photocopy and certify the original long form. Second, and more importantly, apart from the fact that Lakin's whole "unlawful order" position is silly, due to the fact that he wasn't ordered to do anything unlawful, Obama's Hawaiian BC PROVES that Lakin's premise was wrong, and is guilty in accordance with Lakin's own argument.

2. Obama should pardon Lakin

This argument, hashed out in a birther thread at freeperville, is spectacularly silly. The best part of that thread is that the ones advancing it are STILL birthers, and do not believe that Mr. Obama is a "legitimate president". Okay then folks, in order for Lakin to accept a pardon, wouldn't you all have to admit that Mr. Obama has the capacity to issue one as president?

And, finally, if they want to have a welcome party, then they really ought to do it somewhere other than at an airport. There are actual bona fide troops in transit at airports, and I cannot imagine the insult of them having to see this deserter welcomed home from prison. Others, not knowing Lakin, might be gulled into thanking him for his "service", and that's just a real kick in the teeth to those young men and women I see going about their duty at airports all of the time. Additionally, sending out a memo to the effect of "Hey, crazy people, come to an airport and make a ruckus," is just a bad idea for the obvious reasons.

15. And of course once Obama was elected he was the CIC. His legitimacy flows from that, not
whether or not he releases the right kind of document. Lakin chose to set his judgment above that of the American people. Well that is fine if you are a civilian. But if you are in the military, you can't do that.

He missed a movement by design, and that's a no-no, the reason doesn't matter.

12. Awww, poor dumb racist.
Is he actually claiming he would've served if he'd seen the long form?

Too bad he couldn't accept the original valid document. Now his family suffers for having an idiot as their head.

14. The only thing you need to know about Lakin came out of the court martial
During his court martial trial Lakin admitted that he took his pre-deployment leave even though he knew he was never planning to go. Meanwhile his hastily arranged replacement had to go with only a few days notice. Almost as soon as his replacement arrived in Afghanistan he was thrown into a situation where he had to treat a large number of casualties. Now these assholes like Miki Booth from Oklahoma are planning to welcome this Blue Falcon Lakin as if he were a hero.
