Mitch Daniels didn't say "no" because of his Wife
Nor did he eschew a 2012 presidential run because of his Arab heritage: His dad's parents were Syrian Christians, and Mitch is a good Presbyterian boy.

The reason Gov Daniels is sitting this one out? He served 28 months as OMB Director under Dimson. This guy knows a thing or two about economics. (He reportedly told Bush---just prior to his departure from OMB---that cancellation of the tax cuts would be needed in order to pay for Our Great Crusade.)

My view is that Mitch has crunched the numbers, and concluded that the economy will be in noticeably-better shape by November of next year. And we all know what that means, don't we?

;-)

1. Let's hope then
that his number crunching is better than Harold Camping's.

2. He crunched the numbers 10 years ago and look what happened.
Why should we give him credit for having any ability to discern the future of the economy?

4. 2nd paragraph in OP
I don't know what was reported, but if it's accurate we probably can.

6. He can't benefit from the economy no matter what
If it's still bad it's his fault and if it's good it's Obama's doing. No win for him no matter what.

8. The economy will be better? Based on what? Republican job creation?
I don't see anything anyonr in power is doing to create jobs for workers. Made in America? Off the table. Bring back offshore incentives? Off the table. Real$$$$ for infrastructure? Off the table. Name me anything that is being done to improve the economy for working people. Cutting unemployment benifits, firing teachers, police and firefighters while slashing benifits? Huge raises in the price of food, shelter, clothing and fuel? How does that help? No, the only boom in the economy is to our corporate overloards and they aint sharing. Only if you believe the crap on McPravda can you think the economy is getting better for the 98% of us who actually work for a living.

Ask not for whom the Dow Jones bell tolls. It's not for you.

9. Actually
Edited on Sun May-22-11 01:48 PM by Old Codger
I think he isn't going to run because,as someone earlier said, due to possible economics looking a lot rosier by fall of 2012 he could not win and losing makes it harder to run in 16 .. IMHO.

12. 6?
"If it's still bad it's his fault and if it's good it's Obama's doing." How would it be Daniels' fault? That one just confuses me.

13. Not what I was saying
What I was trying to say is that Obama will be re-elected, and will be unbeatable, no one wants to run a losing campaign, it makes it really hard to run again 4 years later if you lost once.Nixon did it and won but not many others. I think they will run a candidate as a consolation prize to some old party faithful ala Dole.

14. You're talking about Romney
And you're probably right. Using the Dole (and McCain) paradigm, the "next guy up" is Mitt.

11. It sounds like his family (esp. wife) factored a lot into his decision
Not that she/his daughters told him "no" per se but that he feared, probably rightly, that he and his family would be attacked and the media would have a "field day" with it all-as evidenced by the fact that they've already been talking about what happened back in the 90's. Actually, what happened actually makes Daniels seem like a more sympathetic person. I don't think it's something that Obama or the DNC would ever use against him in a campaign (or at least I would hope not) however his opponents in the GOP might. He's seen what his own party did to the Clintons and, to some extent, the Obamas (esp. Michelle). I don't like Daniels' politics nor would I ever vote for him but he's certainly not one of the worse Republican politicians out there and I have a certain measure of respect for him for deciding to take his family's well being into consideration over his political ambitions.

15. I don't agree with his politics either
But since DU seems to be on a testosterone jag today, let me say it takes a REAL man to do what he did. Re-marry his wife. Not very macho, and the ego of most men wouldn't allow it. But Daniels---regardless of politics---clearly has backbone.
