Fox News: Obama drunk!!!!!!!!
Edited on Mon May-23-11 10:13 AM by nmbluesky
President Obama took a rare public drink at a bar in Moneygall on Monday, telling the Irish there that he thoroughly enjoyed the Guinness.

"I just want you to know that the president pays his bar tab," Obama said as he gulped down the Irish specialty, the cameras flashing and rolling. He said of the beer, "It is delicious."

3. Well, Guinness is one heck of a lot stronger than most American beer
So, if I quickly gulped down a pint, I might just be a bit "happy." ;)

10. No - quite the reverse
Edited on Mon May-23-11 10:51 AM by dmallind
Most non-beer fans assume this (many think strength = color, but that's just a factor of how the malts are roasted). Guinness however is a pretty low alcohol brew at 4.2% ABV compared to standard US brews like Budweiser, wher 5.0 is the norm. Normal British "session" beers range from 3.3 to 4.6. Anything stronger is usually a premium beer.

It's actually lower in calories than most non-light beers too.

22. Right, also in the UK they are taxed by alcohol content, so their beers tend to be weaker.
The import Guinness Stout is stronger than the domestic product. That doesn't mean its any less tasty.... yum!

36. Guinness is an Irish stout. Try an Imperial Stout.
Imperial Stouts are the really strong ones!

They were originally a gift from England to the Russian czars, which meant that 1., they had to survive a long sea voyage back in the days of wooden ships and sails, and 2., they had to keep the Russians warm in their long winters, thus Imperial Stout is made with an ABV close to 10%.

25. I didn't see him gulp it down. In the video posted here on DU, it looks like he
simply drank part of it...not a very big part, but enough to show he wasn't pretending to drink it. So did Michelle. Why not show Americans that you can drink sensibly and not pound it down?

34. Actually, the Irish are proudly making much of him "downing" it...
"He's the first president I've seen drink the black stuff like he's not ashamed of something."

DUBLIN — Downing a Guinness is a rite of passage for any visitor to Ireland, but too often the VIPs, including some U.S. presidents, disappoint the Emerald Isle. Not President Barack Obama... he didn't hesitate Monday when offered a pint of the dark brew. Obama downed it in four slurps and won cheers across Ireland for it.

"The president actually killed his pint! He gets my vote," said Christy O'Sullivan, a government clerical worker who was taking a long lunch break to watch live TV coverage of Obama's visit to Moneygall, the tiny village where his maternal great-great-great grandfather lived and worked. "He's the first president I've actually seen drink the black stuff like he's not ashamed of something."

Previous American presidents didn't fare as well as Obama. In 1984, Ronald Reagan rejected the Guinness and instead posed for photographers with a pint of Smithwicks, a locally brewed red ale. He didn't finish it. In 2006, George W. Bush, a recovering alcoholic who drinks non-alcoholic beer, wasn't asked to pose with a pint of Guinness at all. Many expected more from Bill Clinton, but ended up deeply disappointed. In 1995, Clinton stopped at a Dublin pub bearing his family's Irish name of Cassidy but barely sipped his stout. Aides said he didn't want to be photographed drinking anything alcoholic, but the resultant image was hardly an endorsement of the product. Clinton had abandoned his almost full half-pint.

But on Monday, an American president finally savored his pint the way a local expects. Audiences watching the moment — deliciously drawn out by Obama for close to a minute — shouted encouragement at their TVs and cheered as he took a hearty swallow and polished it off. Mrs. Obama drank her half-pint, then got behind the bar herself and pulled two pints.

Wel, Guiness aren't that strong, but great beer... The few times I have been on the british isles, Guiness have been a beer I have tasted with pleasure.. In fact one of the first times I was drunk it was in Ireland, on Guiness... I even danced Riil (a irish folk dance) in the middle of the pub.. Great joy... Wel the day after wasen't that funny, but the evening was great.. It was in 1997 so it some years ago.. Guiness is dark beer but really good, full of taste..

And I doubt mr Obama would be drunk on one beer.. Maybe if he had been drinking a few beers he might be little "tipsy" but on one beer, you are not able to be drunk..

29. I thought Dumbya was a "dry alcoholic"? Whatever, we all know that he's still a drunk...
...and exhibits alcoholic behaviors, such as blaming everyone else for his screw-ups.

NOTE: I'm well aware that not all alcoholics are like Dumbya--thank God--but often unreformed alcoholics tend to exhibit this kind of behavior.

27. I know you're joking, but right-wingers did precisely that to President Lula years ago.
Lula sang the praises for a local cachaça during a public appearance and the smear machine ran away with it. With exactly ZERO evidence of him ever having had any problems with alcohol. Rabid anti-PT and anti-Lula people still refer to him as "illiterate drunk". Classy.

So, yeah, I can see that happening.

The beer and travel money that is due to me.

And what would be the proper reaction to that?

I am glad he has fun at the local bars around there and goes out and sees the people, did you hear what the bartender said, that bar been in his family for four generations. Those are the bars I liked to go to, owned by a group that cares about there establishment. And being around people is important for politicians to keep a sense of why they are part of a governance.

His speech was pretty good, and he did mention that he was feeling the beer in the speech, nothing wrong with that.
