FLOTUS hails broken 'brass ceilings'
By CAROL E. LEE | 11/18/09 4:00 PM

First lady Michelle Obama hosted military women in the East Room for an afternoon tea Wednesday, where she praised a sergeant who was killed in the Fort Hood shooting as an example of women’s contribution to the armed forces.

Obama told the story of Staff Sgt. Amy Krueger, who Obama said enlisted in the Army after 9/11 and answered her mother's skepticism about her ability to take on Osama bin Laden with the confident reply: “Watch me.”

“That phrase ‘watch me’ sums up the spirit of our women in uniform throughout our history,” Obama said. “When others doubted you or dismissed you or questioned whether you could endure the training or complete the mission that was your response: ‘Watch me.’”

In her 15-minute remarks, Obama hailed the attendees for breaking “brass ceilings” and said she was proud to sponsor a new Coast Guard cutter bearing the name of Commander Dorothy Stratton, who led the SPARS during World War II. She also highlighted the first Marine One air craft commander who flew an all-female mission in July, “proudly carrying my husband” from the South Lawn to Andrews Air Force Base.

Thanking members of the Joint Chiefs and their wives for attending, Obama told them: “This wasn’t in the script but please stand so that we can recognize and thank all of you … I know you weren’t supposed to do this but you can do it. It’s my house.”

The room was overwhelmingly filled with women, including the first female four-star general and the first African American woman to hold the post of head nurse at Walter Reed. Also attending were Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano – "We’re so proud to have her on our team," Obama said – and second lady Jill Biden, who pledged that she and Obama would “use our platforms” to raise awareness about the concerns of military families.

As Napolitano introduced "first lady Obama," she joked that afternoon tea doesn’t quite capture that grit of what female service members do.

"Maybe that depends on what you put into the tea, I don't know," she said.

Earlier in the day, she visited Meadows Elementary School in Alexandria, Va.

Obama was promoting the Healthier US Schools Challenge which focuses on three core principles: nutritious meals, nutrition education, and physical education.

4. I love it that she always seems to be having such a great time being FLOTU
I'm almost (Please Note: I said almost) sorry I didn't support she and her husband in the primaries. Those children are so proud and adorable and so is she.

a vote for them is beyond me.

29. I like HER...
...and that particular color of green is good for her skin tone, but whose idea were the evening-gown-type ruffles?
And pairing it IN THE SAME GARMENT with sapphire blue?
:wtf:

My sense of style is probably hopelessy ossified and outdated, but outre isn't the same as 'attractive' in my lexicon...

11. I don't get the belt thing.
Michelle is attractive and has a nice shape. Why does she insist on wearing those belts?

This one must have been one of the worst:

The coat did not need a belt and when viewed from behind it bunched up and looked shorter than the dress.

:-(

18. To be honest with you...
I've now started wearing belts a lot now, never did before...I got a large collection already...I love ém...I'm not as tall as Mrs.Obama, and being very top heavy, it does not pay for me to wear them too high up...

25. I like belts too, but use them sparingly.
What I don't like about her belts is that she wears them too high, not on her natural waist, and that she uses them over sweaters and coats. The effect is to bunch up the clothes and make her middle look thicker than it is. The width of some of those belts is also questionable, they are way too wide. I think that she looks better without them. For example, she looks great in A-line dresses.

26. I agree
I find her belts sometimes distracting to what is a great outfit. She's such a stylish and beautiful woman and the extra wide belts that are too high up are just uggh.

22. I was all set to pity her for having misspoken.
I had never heard the term "brass ceiling" before.

The title of First Lady is a sexist anachronism, but it is good to see a smart, caring woman find ways to do good within its strictures.

27. In the service brass ceiling has been around for a long time.
I first heard back in the late 70's. No problem with Mrs Obama using it. At least she knows what it means.

It will interesting what the husband of a POTUS will be called.

31. That's why I'm surprised and embarrased at not recognizing it immediately.
Its derivation is so obvious after a moment's thought. Was I that oblivious in my Army years?
