21.31 That's all for tonight folks as we leave dignitaries to enjoy their dinner. The Telegraph's live blog will be back, in the same place, tomorrow morning so join us for day two of the Obama's state visit to Britain.

20.59 Mr Obama's short speech lasted only around four minutes. He quoted Churchill and talked of a "union of hearts based on common convictions and ideals". He said the two countries can have "confidence in the future" thanks to their continued shared partnership and ideals. He thanked Britain for standing "shoulder to shoulder" with America since 9/11.

20.56 Mr Obama thanks Britain for being America's "closest partner" in the War on terror. The President proposes a toast to Her Majesty The Queen and quotes Shakespeare before the guests tuck into dinner.

20.54 Mr Obama takes the stage now and thanks The Queen for her "warm friendship". The President says it's a "great honour" to be in this "great country" to "reinforce the special relationship".
