The Morning Plum: Can Ryancare help Dems win back seniors and independents?
Answer: Yes, it can!
The Morning Plum
By Greg Sargent

Can Ryancare help Dems win back seniors and independents? With the debate over whether NY-26 is a bellwether for 2012 still in full swing, a pair of liberal leaning groups will release a poll today finding that voters nationally oppose Ryancare by a 16-point margin (38 percent for; 54 percent against) when the plan is describd to them as follows:

“Instead of the government paying doctors and hospitals directly for treating seniors as Medicare does now, the government would provide vouchers to help seniors buy their own private health insurance policy.”

The poll — which interviewed 800 likely voters by land-line and cell and will be released today by the Herndon Alliance and Know Your Care — also finds that this description drives opposition to the plan up to 58 percent among seniors and 60 percent among independents, two voting blocs that were crucial to the GOP victory in 2010 that Dems are working hard to win back for 2012.

1. The Republicans are trying to use the same strategy with Medicare
as they tried to do with Social Security back in 2005 (which was oddly enough based on a V.I. Lenin strategy for creating a communist society). Their plan is basically to "buy off" or convince people at or near eligibility for Medicare to sign the "death warrant" for Medicare as they know it for people younger than them. It didn't work for Social Security and I hope and pray that it doesn't work for Medicare.

2. Ryan's plan also takes away current benefits for those already on Medicare
It eliminates the closing of the donut hole and the yearly health screenings made possible by the Affordable Care Act, aka 'Obamacare.' 'Ryancare' is another egregious giveaway to not only health insurance companies, but drug companies, as well-while greatly driving up health care costs for seniors--and thus, profits to the health insurance industry. Surprise, surprise!

5. Yet curiously Ryancare MANDATES insurance coverage for seniors
You know, the same kind of mandate they're fighting against in the ACA and Romney is twisting himself into pretzel knots trying to defend (re: Romneycare). The Republicans are all over the map on this. I'm not even sure they know what way they're going to turn next.

3. It is difficult to believe
42% of seniors would give up their Medicare in exchange for coupons.

4. Coupons that would not keep up with medical inflation, but that's Ryan's goal--to shift the cost to
seniors. Good luck with selling 'Ryancare' to America, GOP!

6. It doesn't sound like they're having much luck
The problem is now they're trying to use Ryancare as a means of holding other important initiatives "hostage". I wonder if anybody will do a poll about how they feel about THAT?

7. I'd like to see President Obama use his bully pulpit to call Mitch McConnell out on his tying
Medicare cuts to voting to increase the debt ceiling.

at some point I think he will. I am guessing that he is playing his usual "long game" on this.
