randomly sampling a population should produce wild swings 5-10% of the time.

Edited on Tue Jun-07-11 09:15 PM by Doctor Hurt
If you're sampling from a population, normally distributed, you are going to get significant departures from the mean value at a rate equal to one's significance threshold.

Since most researchers use a threshold criterion of 5%-10%, Then 1 out of every 20 to 1 out of every 10 samples will show significant excursions from the mean.

whats going on with Gallup? We are seeing wild swings in polling numbers that seem unusually for a 3 day rolling poll.

He pushed up +7 (4 positive/ 3 negative) in one day!

Am I allowed to now call Obama's 46% approval rating from a few days ago an outlier?

47. I think Gallup has some internal questions to ask themselves...
Edited on Sat Jun-04-11 09:16 PM by aaaaaa5a

I don't pretend to be an all mighty, mathematical, polling expert, but there is something dearly wrong with numerical swings this drastic in what is suppose to be a rolling 3 day average. Remember the poll only takes 1 day into consideration each day. The other 2 days are already factored in. 1 day can't be enough to swing numbers this drastically all the time.

What is Obama doing? Polling 80% one day? And 15% the next? With no apparent news stories or political events to justify the real high marks or the real low marks?

I love Gallup. I consider it the Gold standard. But my faith has been shaken in their numbers the last few weeks. They make no sense at all.

55. 1 day can certainly be enough to swing these averages
1 outlier day drops off, or an outlier rolls onto the sample. As I noted above, it is not improbable to have bad outliers every 20 days of sampling or so, and slightly less extreme shifts will happen much more often.

56. A closer look at the numbers are telling. Only 37% approve on his
handling of the economy. He is also very low on the budget and immigration.

His job approval is being sustained almost entirely on his handling of terrorism and war.

This does not bode well. As teh campaigns ramp up, the repukes and media will focus on the economy. People will increasingly care more about the economy.
