Wanker of the Day: Peggy Noonan

by BooMan
Sun Jun 5th, 2011 at 01:54:47 PM EST

I occasionally pause to gape in wonder at Peggy Noonan's strange, vaguely crazy, and meandering columns because I can't believe this woman is a respected member of the Beltway press corp. Today, she talks about the fight over raising the debt ceiling, and, quite predictably, she argues that the president should give the Republicans everything they want and ask for nothing in return. But then she quite typically lurches into a side issue. She decides to talk about Barack Obama's character and performance in office. Take a look at this conclusion to a column that is supposed to be about the budget and our debt.

...

Four words: He made it worse.

Obama inherited financial collapse, deficits and debt. He inherited a broken political culture. These things weren't his fault. But through his decisions, he made them all worse.

How about "He shored up a collapsing economy, saved the automotive and banking industries, enacted universal access to health care, won the Nobel Peace Prize, enacted the START Treaty, killed Bin-Laden, and calmly guided the country through the turbulence in the Middle East"?

Seems like a good start. He hasn't even had one term yet, you know. We can all find plenty of things to fault in all our presidents, including Lincoln and FDR, but it shouldn't be hard to note Obama's huge accomplishments, even if we're dissatisfied with their form and scope.

snip//

It's hard to show a lot of warmth and high regard when your opponents are questioning your religious faith, questioning your citizenship, and calling you a socialist destroyer. I don't actually recall that Bill Clinton was all that warm and fuzzy when he was being hounded by Kenneth Starr. If I'm willing to grant Noonan anything, it's that the president doesn't suffer fools very well. And he's surrounded by them. It's these fools that Noonan speaks for, and to.

2. Yes, I think it is spreading!
I hear more and more incoherent babbling coming from the right wing talking heads, not to mention republicans in congress, and now the same incoherent babble is coming from the "clowns" that have decided they need to run for the republican nomination so they can actually "run" this country. Maybe run it further into the ground, but that's all they would do!

Now I guess they figure nobody will see through their BS, but just like Rush and Glen Beck, I really think people in this country are getting wise to what is being said from the right. Now its true there will always be that group, around 25% or so, who will "NEVER" open their eyes and see the truth, no matter what. They will continue to listen to the dribble from the right, and they will buy it hook, line and sinker! The good thing is polls are showing that the majority of Americans are NOT buying into the BS, and they actually can see just how far off the right wingers who are paid to get the "message" out really are, and that has to be a good thing!

3. The Washington press corps aren't serious journalists as a group.
All they do it focus on small details about who's up/down or who's going to win what election. Anything serious rarely comes from them. They're too close to power to tell the truth it's all about airing out their own biases.

5. sometimes i wonder why the white house bothers with the press corps
they no longer serve a serious function.

once upon a time, they reported facts, and could create serious scandals that could sink a presidency. you ignored them at your peril.

now, they go and invent the facts that suit their agenda and find someone to be a "source" for them. they invent scandals regardless. so why should a president bother? formal access only lends them credibility they do not deserve.

obama would be better served to make his own press releases, and maybe to brief only the remaining few objective reporters.
for the sake of appearances, he could gather questions from the rest of the "reporters" and have a staffer filter through them so he can respond to just a few questions, in case they accidently ask a serious one.

or, i would love to a side-by-side briefing:

"for serious reporters, today obama proposed this bill, signed into law the following act, authorized aid for the following people, and brokered a peace deal with those countries. for the rest of the reporters, his tie was red and he shook hands with someone whose cousin once got a speeding ticket."

7. Noonan, aside from being a hack, is not really of the 'press
corps.'She is not a reporter, nor a journalist, she is a commentator based on her positions in past Republican administrations and her authorship of crappy books. She is Reagan's Pen, blah blah. Has a column. Press Corps? Member of? Respected? Not sure of any of that at all. Krugman, not a hack, has a column. Is he a member of the Press Corps? No.

18. Yep he mandated Universal Corporate Controlled Healthcare. As far from single payer, government

controlled healthcare as you can get. The insurance companies
own the US healthcare system. Until that is taken away from them
Americans will have the best quality, least available healthcare
in the world.

22. I LOVE Peggy Noonan!!!
Edited on Mon Jun-06-11 09:13 AM by JoePhilly
If you want to have some fun on Sunday morning, watch ABC News Sunday with Christiane Amanpour, when Noonan and George Will are on.

There are a few games you can play.

The first is to count how many times Peggy sighs, wrinkles her face like some one farted, or makes a false display of listening intently to something some one else says. Then compare the number of those to the number of times that George Will becomes exasperated and makes a false display of that.

You can also bet on which of the the following events will happen first.
1) George Will makes a reference to a very obscure historical event that no one on the planet has ever heard of.
2) Peggy talks about some famous political figure she talked to one time long ago (usually Reagan).

When those two are on, its like the Pompous Olympics.
