New Reuters poll: Obama leads Romney by 13 points! (51-38)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama retains a big lead over possible Republican rivals in the presidential election despite anxiety about the economy and the country's future, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll on Wednesday.

Obama's approval rating inched up 1 percentage point from May to 50 percent but the number of Americans who believe the country is on the wrong track also rose as pricier gasoline, persistently high unemployment and a weak housing market chipped away at public confidence.

Obama leads all potential Republican challengers by double-digit margins. He is ahead of his closest Republican rival, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, by 13 percentage points -- 51 percent to 38 percent.

"Obama's position has gotten a little stronger over the last couple of months as the public mood has evened out, and as an incumbent he has some big advantages over his rivals," Ipsos pollster Cliff Young said.

"Until Republicans go through a primary season and select a nominee, they are going to be at a disadvantage in the head-to-head matchups in name recognition."

Sarah Palin and Romney lead the pack of Republicans battling for the right to challenge Obama in the November 2012 election.

2. What was that poll all over the media yesterday with Romney narrowly beating Obama?
CNN was practially calling it for Romney.

4. Every time they get one poll that does that, they flog it to death-even if there are 10 other polls
that consistently say differently.

I knew they were all going to be delirious over that poll so I was glad to be mostly cable-news-free yesterday.

29. Yeah, that must have been what I heard touted on CNN in the breakroom.
But CNN is like Fox to me, I just rolled my eyes and left. Polls in general, really, at this stage of the game.

7. Mittens and Failin will team together. Mittens will run for president, Failin as VP.
Edited on Wed Jun-08-11 01:20 PM by Liberal_Stalwart71
What it does is neutralize his shortcomings. The religious bigotted nutbags don't want Mittens, but they love Failin. The Teabaggers will be satisfied because though they also hate Mittens, they, too love Failin. And the Establishment is in his pocket, along with the Koch Bros.

DU: That's your GOP ticket!!

9. Seems about right
But, these polls mean nothing to Obama right now.

If the economy is viewed as doing good this time next year Obama will win re election easily, if it is a double dip recession he loses.

15. Obama's messaging on the economy and potential slowdown
Edited on Wed Jun-08-11 03:49 PM by fujiyama
needs to be re-calibrated ASAP. His response to the possibility of a double dip was incredibly tone deaf. And as usual the republican talking points are going unanswered, especially on the effectiveness of the stimulus package and deficit spending.

Instead, I see Democrats like Clinton of all people falling for this notion that people like Ryan are responsible and bold, rather than the reality which is that republicans are being reckless and void of any real ideas. More than anytime in the last few years, I think it's obvious that the stimulus package should have been bigger than it actually was and focused more on public works measures, infrastructure spending, and investments in science and technology, especially in sectors which have been affected by automation and outsourcing.

Obama had the right idea in focusing on getting the stimulus package out quickly and I know these are areas he wants to invest in, but I believe, like the health care bill, he settled for much less than it should have been. I suspect part of that trepidation comes from bad advice from among others, Geithner, Summers, and Rahm Emanuel. Of course part of that was due to the foolish desire to be bipartisan, while the reality is that republicans were and still are offering the same tired approach that has led nowhere in recovering from this or other economic crises - tax cuts, spending cuts, and further deregulation.

That other poll was probably bogus.. it was in that it had only 6% undecided which makes no sense this far out.

Obama when the unemployment rate is over 9%?

Yeah, that will happen.:sarcasm:

31. Its a long way to election day but this is very good news.
Even in the face of a struggling economy and very high unemployment rate, America still loves the President.
