If Obama Pulled His Name From Seeking POTUS in 2012...WHO?

...Just suppose and read nothing more.

......Would be a competitive replacement by the time of the convention to receive the nomination?

1. If he declines to run, I think the nomination would be handed to Hillary Clinton, if she wanted it.

6. Why, because she was runner-up in 2008?
What about the Presidential line of succession?

Silly question in the first place, though. Why when others melt down around the President do others seem to wonder about HIM?

Day by day he's proving to be the sane adult in the room. This won't become evident to some until after he's finished his second term, apparently.

7. I got another hypothetical question
What would happen if the democratic nominee was unable to continue the race after he got the nomination? Would it go to the VP nominee or would we have a new nominee picked by the executive committee of the party?

8. I'm sure there are a number of DUers who have been rooting for Obama's demise
since Day #1 and would want Hillary to take the nomination.

If Obama stepped down, Republicans are sure to take the presidency regardless of Hillary fantasies. It's a silly question, really.

electorate to make the right decisions. I now fear that because the Republicans are doing everything they can to destroy the economy, the Democrats will lose, and lose big. Unless Americans wake up and see what's happening; and unless Democrats here on DU and in general open their eyes and stop expecting the president to be pure in this hostile environment, we may have a chance. But if American voters--the so-called Independents, especially--blame Obama/The Democrats for destroying the economy and NOT Republicans, we're in big trouble!!

15. You Don't Think Any of These GOP Candidates
would actually beat Hillary, do you? She's "controversial" with the folks who use terms like "Obamacare." She's actually fairly popular among most of the electorate.

17. Anyone who is not the president and is not in a governing position is popular.
Edited on Mon Jun-13-11 08:42 AM by Liberal_Stalwart71
That all changes once one starts governing and is faced with making difficult decisions. Hillary learned this the hard way when she pushed for her health care reform package back in the early 90's.

I like Hillary Clinton, but she can be divisive and she can be stubborn on some things. For instance, Daniel Patrick Moynihan tried to convince her to push for a more incremental reform package. (You'll hear Lawrence O'Donnell recount this story.) She simply refused.

I think Obama learned from Hillary's mistakes. While we all want and strive for single payer, we understand how the electorate is with that kind of comprehensive approach, not to mention push back from our political enemies and the insurance companies themselves. To put single payer reforms into play would take many years to implement. I think Obama was trying to be pragmatic. He was wrong, I admit, but did what he felt was right. And the reform package isn't all bad. But an incremental approach is probably more necessary.

Any momentum for a public option has all but died because there are more Rethugs in the legislature. Obama's biggest problem is the Blue Dogs/Corporatists in the Senate who were never going to support a public option.

9. Joe Biden
I don't think it would happen. But, Joe Biden is already VP. I assume he would want the position. He could ask Hilary Clinton if she's interested in being VP.

I don't think the President would pull his name though. To my mind, it should be easy for him to beat ANYONE republicans have to offer this season.

14. OK... I will indulge you
Let's suppose some undisclosed private family matter led to such a decision. The most "competitive" replacements would obviously be Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton. I would imagine that relatively few politicians would throw their hat in the ring so as to allow the party to coalesce around one individual to mitigate the damage caused by an announcement such as this.

I doubt HRC would run again or Biden. The others would run---but would fail.

19. Idiotic, non productive question
President Obama is not going to decide "not to run". If for some - likely awful reason - such as health, there would be an open nomination and it is not clear who would run.

This is really flamebait to get people to push Hillary and others to attack her. I am not playing. Sorry.

26. Obama won the nomination fair and square and against great odds
Edited on Mon Jun-13-11 10:57 AM by karynnj
Hillary started the primary season with probably 30 to 40% of the Democratic voters in her corner. It was her nomination to lose - and no non incumbent Presidents or their VPS had ever been seen as the inevitable nominee to the degree that she did.

Obama was lucky that the media gave no credibility to anyone but him, Edwards, and Hillary. Hillary would have won had there been a more crowded field. As it was, Edwards quickly crumbled leaving the real contest Hillary vs Obama. Not to diminish Obama , who was impressive, some of us saw it as Hillary vs ABH. Had any other candidate garnered a significant portion of the ABH vote, she likely would have won. In a primary, getting between 30 and 40 in a primary will likely win it. If she won a number of primaries at the beginning - the theme that already existed that she was inevitable would have been reaffirmed and she would have won those that seem to just go with the one that is winning.
