Howard Dean: I’d Get A Congressional Authorization On Libya War

Evan McMorris-Santoro

MINNEAPOLIS -- Howard Dean, the former Vermont governor and 2004 presidential candidate who helped spark the Netroots Nation conference being held here, told TPM that he would not continue the war in Libya without congressional authorization the way President Obama has.

But he declined to criticize Obama over his choice to continue the fighting without asking Congress to weigh in.

<...>

He expressed support for the goals of the war, saying his support for it meant he wasn't going to ding Obama over the authorization.

"I do think lives are being saved, I do think the British and the French are taking the lead," Dean said. "So that's not where I'm going to be going after Obama."

1. Howard Dean is a mensch.
I really appreciate the way he has stated this. It reminds me of the way President Obama worded his response when asked about Anthony Weiner. Both men expressed their opinion respectfully without denigrating those with which they disagree.

2. Headlines will always be used against them to not give the full nuance of their answers.
Oh, well...

That's what the press does with nuance. They've done pretty well for themselves anyway. :)

3. HuffPost and Politico have made provocative headlines an art form.
I like the juicy bits that follow.

5. Of course,
Howard Dean didn't say, "Obama sucks," so he wants to kill people.

6. War is the last refuge of the incompetent statesman.

And the first order of the war profiteer.

On the one hand, he is saying we must cut spending, on the other, he engages in more wars.

The two positions are inconsistent with logic.

Just ask yourself, do we NEED to be at war in Libya? Of course not, therefore not engaging in the war is the best place for cost cutting.

"War is the last refuge of the incompetent statesman."

9. Obama should tell those assholes in Congress, when you start scheduling
votes on some of my judicial nominees, I'll give due respect to the Legislative branch. Until then, go fuck yourselves.

But that's just me. :-)

10. He should tell them to actually follow the War Powers Act and *form a committee to vote on it*.

What people *continually miss* is that they're *required to do that*. Obama "welcomes it."
