Obama to Americans (paraphrase): "Sorry, suckers - I'm with the GOP on offshoring your jobs"

"Extend aid for American workers displaced by foreign trade"??? Weren't we lectured by pompous economists and unctuous White House shills that these agreements were supposed to create all kinds of (Mc)Jobs, not destroy current, good-paying American jobs?

Actually, we already know that the South Korea "free trade" deal with http://www.epi.org/economic_snapshots/entry/free_trade_agreement_with_korea_will_cost_U.S._jobs/">cost the United States about 159,000 jobs.

We also already know that the Trade Assistance program that Obama is fraudulently pushing as some sort of "balance" to the further wholesale decimation of domestic American industry is just that -- a fraud. It has been a http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/06/us/06retrain.html">gigantic failure, because any good American jobs people retrain for have are simply being offshored to other countries in the same manner as before.

Deal reached to advance US trade pacts

WASHINGTON - (AP) -- The White House and congressional lawmakers reached a deal Tuesday to propel three coveted free trade agreements toward a vote on Capitol Hill, though the ultimate fate of the pacts with South Korea, Colombia and Panama remained uncertain.

Key lawmakers from both parties struck an agreement with the administration to extend aid for American workers displaced by foreign trade. The White House, acknowledging concerns from labor unions, had threatened to hold up passage of the pacts unless the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, or TAA, was renewed.

The pro-business U.S. Chamber of Commerce also urged lawmakers to move quickly to pass the pacts.

Labor unions and key Democrats continue to have deep concerns in particular over the deal with Colombia, a country considered extremely dangerous for union organizers. While Colombia has agreed to implement an action plan for protecting worker rights and ending violence against union groups, the top Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan, said Monday that he would oppose the trade deal if it did not include specific language committing Colombia to carry out those steps.

7. "Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan, said Monday..." Evidently,
the article is selective with facts.

Levin opposes Colombia agreement, but support Korea, Panama agreements

Evidently, Obama is with Levin on at least two of the agreements.

All the free trade agreements have been successes. The president is right on this.

33. I'd almost think that you must be joking
"free trade" collapses domestic industry - the simplest statement.

Example - Haiti. They were self-sufficient in rice production for decades, up until the nineties. As a part of a political agreement, they were forced to open up their markets to US rice. Immediately, Haitian growers couldn't compete with the price and went out of business. Since then they have been heavily dependent on food imports and in a deeper hole every year.

The same basic description can be applied to the decline of US manufacturing and the subsequent decline of the US middle class - a free market puts all markets at the mercy of the most mechanized (with the fewest actual workers), or at the mercy of any country willing to enslave its population.

In any case, I think the longest and worst effect is still to come; there are only 5 or 6 countries now with large agricultural surpluses, and the rest of the countries of the world are heavily dependent on them. Free markets basically favor US-style industrial agriculture, ending local food production, turning rural subsistence farmers and small-holders into new urban poor, and breaking the link between population and the land.

38. I don't think the people buy it anymore - but our politicians are bought by...
...those who will benefit from more "free trade."

The people just seem to be paralyzed by all the corruption - except in places like Wisconsin.

I hope we'll see a massive uprising in some form soon!
