Eric Holder Announces Full DOJ Investigation Into Deaths Of Two Individuals In CIA Custody

Ryan J. Reilly

Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Justice Department is conducting a full investigation into the deaths of two individuals in CIA custody during the Bush administration.

Holder said that special prosecutor John Durham, who is leading the inquiry, reviewed a "tremendous volume of information pertaining to the detainees" that included "both information and matters that had never previously been examined by the Department."

"Mr. Durham has advised me of the results of his investigation, and I have accepted his recommendation to conduct a full criminal investigation regarding the death in custody of two individuals," Holder said.

"Those investigations are ongoing," he said. "The Department has determined that an expanded criminal investigation of the remaining matters is not warranted."

The Justice Department will drop criminal investigations of most CIA officials who participated in the harsh interrogations of terrorism suspects, Attorney General Eric Holder announced Thursday.

However, Holder said his department will continue to investigate those officials responsible for the deaths of two detainees.

The announcement ends a wide-ranging probe that has hung over the CIA due to its past use of enhanced interrogation practices that critics say amounted to torture, such as waterboarding. "The Department has determined that an expanded criminal investigation of the remaining matters is not warranted," Holder said in a statement.

Instead, Holder decided to only conduct a full criminal investigation regarding the death of two detainees who were held by the CIA.

I left out the part that was in another article? That's a different article.

Still, from your link:

However, Holder said his department will continue to investigate those officials responsible for the deaths of two detainees...Instead, Holder decided to only conduct a full criminal investigation regarding the death of two detainees who were held by the CIA.

Also,

The announcement ends a wide-ranging probe that has hung over the CIA because of its past use of enhanced interrogation practices, such as waterboarding, that critics say amounted to torture. "The department has determined that an expanded criminal investigation of the remaining matters is not warranted," Holder said in a statement.

So the Obama administration had been conducting a "wide-ranging probe" of torture? Runs contrary to the claims there was no investigation, doesn't it?

5. The wide-ranging probe is over?
Did they probe high-level Bush Administration lawyers and other officials who approved of illegal torture?

I think the evidence is pretty clear that high-level Bush Administration officials committed war crimes and approved of torture. They wanted to obtain a link between Saddam and Al-Qaeda in order to justify the invasion of Iraq. Of course that link turned out to be non-existent.

What is Holder waiting for? The evidence is there.

4. Holder is still following the Bybee/Yoo Memo criteria here: if it didn't cause death or major organ

failure (redundant), the abuse isn't torture and is therefore lawful.

Right to a Tee - Holder is effectively applying the same rule as under Bush-Cheney.

8. Salvo one in the current whitewash, salvo two already begun: ...lower expectations on the two left.
Aside from all the rhetoric we received at that time, years and years ago, then came the years and years of waiting.
