“Obama lit him up. Cantor sat in stunned silence,”
Edited on Wed Jul-13-11 09:15 PM by Clio the Leo
Drama Obama! :)

Cantor said he would be willing to abandon his own insistence on having just one vote on the debt ceiling if they could agree to a smaller package of cuts in exchange for a shorter-term hike that would require another increase before the 2012 election.

But Obama said he wouldn’t do the debt-limit increase incrementally and that he would veto a short-term bill.

“That’s when he got very agitated,” Cantor told reporters.

“Obama lit him up. Cantor sat in stunned silence,” said an official in the meeting. “It was incredible. If the public saw Obama he would win in a landslide.”

4. thing is, if Obama was enraged and blustering angry as often as he is called to
be he would just be another hothead.

but,
when a thoughtful gentleman loses it, ermm, maybe once every couple years or so - you pay attention.

I never for a moment thought Obama was afraid of confrontation. He just has a much longer fuse than most of us other mortals.

Very "lawyerly" - in my experience.

15. But there's a difference between "blustering angry" and "ice cold."
Obama being "ice cold" sounds like he was just saying something with the same look he had in his eyes that he had while watching the bin Laden take-out.

Often the effect is giving you the impression of someone who would shoot you in the head as soon as look at you.

40. "us other mortals"
Hey, at least you admit he's mortal.

As Rome burns, many flail to find justifications to characterize him as other-worldly, while he fights to hold the center. By doing so, he abandons the left and lets things be drawn further to the right. Big deal, though: he's not from the left.

Yeah, yeah, people will bellyache that he never said he was, but he slyly accepted the support and sustained the belief that he was. Now it's a rearguard action against the reactionaries, and they play for keeps. Maybe he'll call them out for being neo-feudalists, but I'm not holding my breath.

Like Bill Clinton, he still thinks they'll like him someday.

6. Cantor is a real piece of work:
“Cantor’s account of tonight’s meeting is completely overblown. For someone who knows how to walk out of a meeting, you’d think he’d know it when he saw it,” a Democratic aide said. “Cantor rudely interrupted the president three times to advocate for short-term debt ceiling increases while the president was wrapping the meeting. This is just more juvenile behavior from him and Boehner needs to rein him in, and let the grown-ups get to work. “

On exiting the room, Obama said that “this confirms the totality of what the American people already believe” about Washington, according to a Democratic official familiar with the negotiations, and that officials are “too focused on positioning and political posturing” to make difficult choices.

His arrogance is absolutely stunning. I am so glad the President is checking him.

I also think that Boehner has had it up to here with Cantor and is now letting him run amok just so that everyone can see what a jerk he is. Cantor's about to be his own undoing.

And then let him know that you have shown it to a few fellow Republicans who agree with me that Cantor is an idiot. And blackmail the hell out of him.

But then again, too many of the Republicans would probably think that Cantor was awesome.

17. Those are to be addressed later and the definition of "cuts" is yet to be determined &
in the case of Medicare, you will see that health care professionals will have a significant role in what is cut and how, so as to avoid damaging services/care. Remember, Senator Bernie Sanders says there is good reason to consider cuts to payments, as distinct from services. Payments, such as, the 14% above costs that HMOs receive, for example. There's lots being written about this as "Medicare Reform", which Sanders supports btw. Google it and you will find discussions coming from Physicians for a National Health Program, The Brookings Institute (the closest thing there is in the U.S. to a non-Right-wing think tank) and The Robert Woods Johnson Foundation, amongst others.

Haven't started reading up on Social Security changes yet, but will start posting once I do.

36. Why don't you provide quotes or links for what Sanders says?
He speaks with all the direct clarity that this situation calls for, so why reword him?

Two short months ago, Sanders introduced 'Medicare For All' legislation, so that is the sort of reform he supports, and here is a link for those who like to hear Bernie from Bernie:

38. Most of what I heard was in podcasts from Thom Hartmann's Townhall with Senator Sanders, a subscript
ion base, $7.50 @ mo, feed. Perhaps the problem with that source is, though, that I have seen uninformed right-wingish attacks on Thom Hartmann on this board lately, so my guess is that source, even if people subscribed to it, will not be good enough for some people.

If people care, they should LEARN how to go after information themselves. We're on the internet for god's sake! Use that information that IS available to you to make up their own minds, instead of seeing some DU-ers, who quite possibly know little or nothing specific about Medicare, screaming about "cuts" and then practically everyone here starts quacking and getting all buzzed on their own juices to try to take this President down, with little or no regard for how doing so will further entrench economic injustice in our "health" "care" systems, very definitely at the cost of many people's lives.

37. They're all out of their league. Today's Rueter's story in my local
paper quotes McConnell throughout talking about how bad this is for the GOP during an election season. "If we don't raise the debt ceiling, Obama is going to blame us, with success, and this will be terrible for us going into an election season."

Getting relected is all they care about. They don't give a shit about the state of the nation.

41. Obama should call the GOP bluff
And demand that Cantor release his plan for how to cut $2.4 trillion. Its also time to demand Cantor pass it through the House. The GOP has the nerve now to demand that Obama come up with the cuts while the GOP hides from the heat. Meanwhile, the GOP doesn't even have nearly enough votes to pass what they are advocating. 80 to 120 GOP House members refuse to vote for any increase under any circumstances. Those members should release their plan for how the government can get by on 60% of its current revenue.

67. Lit him up? More like dumped a bucket of water on a horny Chiwawa that was trying to hump his leg.

I really can't visualize Eric "Eddie Munster" Cantor and Barack Obama having an argument of any kind. An argument suggests a fair fight of some sort. The only analogy I can think of in a Cantor vs. Obama duel is when Mr. Myxiciplic used to "fight" Superman. It wasn't like he was fighting with Braniac or Lex Luthor. It was just a comic relief contest.

73. Cantor is a petulant child or a deadly ideologue who desires
to destroy the US economy along with millions of lost jobs and trillions more in lost assets.
