Exactly how much has spending gone up in the last 20 years year by year?

I have doubts other than the two wars that spending is an issue.

Especially when we were in the black just before Bush took office.

3. Federal spending increased from about $1.8 trillion to $3 trillion during Bush's term.

It rose to $3.45 trillion in 2010. Tax revenues have not kept pace, partly due to the Bush tax cuts and partly due to the recession.
