Bachmann: Everybody Should Pay Taxes
By Jonathan Weisman

Republican presidential candidates have been resolutely opposed to tax increases in the debate over the nation’s budget straits, but Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann this week suggested there’s one group that needs to be paying more: poor people who pay nothing now.

At a town-hall meeting Tuesday given by the South Carolina Christian Chamber of Commerce in Columbia, a questioner noted that major U.S. corporations are paying “very few dollars of federal income taxes, if any.” He prefaced his point by saying the Bible advises us to render unto Caesar what Caesar is due.

Ms. Bachmann turned the conversation elsewhere: “Part of the problem is today, only 53% pay any federal income tax at all; 47% pay nothing,” the former federal tax attorney said. “We need to broaden the base so that everybody pays something, even if it’s a dollar.”

2. "Even if it's a dollar'
The cost of processing a single paper-filed tax return is $2.87, compared to $0.35 for an e-filed return.

3. Hey Bachmann, it's an easy fix,
BRING BACK THE JOBS! And not that $5 an hour crap either. You want a tax base? Build it! Oh, but that's too much work for the likes of you. It's easier to rip off poor people for the little bit they have left.

That this woman is even being considered a front runner for a major party is a sad, sad statement about our country.

7. Old-time Republicans like Eisenhower . . .
would just break down and cry if they could see their party now.

4. Actually something I agree with
Everybody benefits from what federal income taxes provides, so everybody should pay... even if it's just 1%.

12. Excuse me. You need to find out how much income is not taxed for those that pay taxes.
Average Itemized Deductions (3rd column) on Adjusted Gross Income (After exemptions)

$00-15k --- 05.2% / $13,138
$15-30k --- 15.9% / $12,775
$30-50k --- 36.6% / $13,648
$50-100k -- 66.1% / $17,432
$100-200k - 90.2% / $25,902
$200k+ ---- 93.3% / $64,835

The 2nd column is the percent within that group that itemize their deductions.

Everyone gets the same amount for each exemption claimed regardless of income level. In 2010, everyone got $3,650 exempted from taxes for each exemption claimed.

Everyone that did not file an itemized return would use the standard deduction method:
If they filed single or married filing separately it is $5,700
If they filed married filing jointly or qualifying widow it is $11,400
If they filed as head of household it is $8,400

Now tell me how those that "pay taxes" are screwed by those that "don't pay taxes" when both have the same income that is not taxed.

It is the same on the income that is taxed.

Everyone that has taxable income that is from:

$0 to $8,500 is taxed at 10%
$8,500 to $34,500 is taxed at 15%
$34,500 to $83,600 is taxed at 25%
$83,600 to $174,400 is taxed at 28%
$174,400 to $379,150 is taxed at 33%
$379,150 and above is taxed at 35%

That means that each of the above group has taxable income that is taxed at 10%. Each of the above group does not have all of their taxable income taxed at one rate. Each part of their income that falls within different groups is taxed separately.

For me, I have taxable income that is taxed at 3 different rates. Some at 10%, some at 15%, and some at 25%.

Also, that those with income of over $106,800 don't pay any more Social Security taxes.

Someone with a million dollar income doesn't pay $37,514.40 in Social Security taxes.
For each $100k of income above the $106,800 cap they don't pay $4,200.

8. Yeah...
A common misconception is that poor people (and illegal immigrants) don't pay taxes... but they most certainly do.

In the case of poor people, it's just that they cannot afford the federal income tax.

Logically, it doesn't make much sense to tax poor people so that they become poorer. The government would receive more revenue if the economic condition of its citizens simply improved.

11. Of course not. THEY're successful! Why punish them??
Tax the unsuccessful losers so that they are eventually motivated to become successful Americans!

Or... something like that. I heard it on the radio once.
