FDL: President Barack Herbert Hoover Obama Explains How to Avoid a Depression
Due to DU posting rules I cannot paste the entire comparisons taken from Presidential speeches. Follow the link and then you decide.

By: Scarecrow Saturday July 23, 2011 9:34 am

On several occasions after the Great Depression began, President Hoover admonished the public and those demanding the government provide economic relief that the nation had run out of money and that it would be irresponsible to borrow and engage in profligate spending. Over 80 years later, we are hearing virtually the same economic gibberish from President Obama.

...

What we now face is a President who insists we are in a debt crisis that reputable economists say is phony, a product of deficit hysteria, political cynicism, and economic ignorance.. And he insists the debt crisis requires we take economically damaging steps that will harm the public by undermining popular and beneficial programs to preserve our future. He’s told us we must do this to achieve economic prosperity and that we can’t even have a meaningful conversation about the jobless until this is done so the debt problem is not just a distraction; solving it is a prerequisite to economic recovery. Eat your peas.

Moreover, he’s effectively affirmed the precedent that it’s okay for a crazy, irresponsible, anti-government party to threaten to tank US credit, because the debt limit offers an opportunity to cut government in major ways that might not otherwise be politically possible. God bless the Tea-GOP!

3. Hmmmm?
"What we now face is a President who insists we are in a debt crisis that reputable economists say is phony, a product of deficit hysteria, political cynicism, and economic ignorance.."

Guess Krugman isn't a "reputable economist"

In about a month, if nothing is done, the federal government will hit its legal debt limit. There will be dire consequences if this limit isn’t raised. At best, we’ll suffer an economic slowdown; at worst we’ll plunge back into the depths of the 2008-9 financial crisis.

link

What an alarmist!

Krugman: "Mr. Obama...has done more to rein in long-run deficits than any previous president."

Everyone knows that only Hoover cared about the debt:

<...>

FDR’s initial response to the Great Depression provides an interesting case in point, for Roosevelt came into office as something of a fiscal conservative. In keeping with the fiscal orthodoxy of the time, he called for a balanced budget during his campaign, was reluctant to deficit spend once in office, and even pressed for the successful passage of the 1933 Economy Act as one of his first major pieces of legislation-an act which cut federal spending by nearly 250 million dollars during the first months of his administration.

21. I think you are misinterpreting the post
The long-term deficit issue is not the same as the need to raise the debt ceiling right now.

Everyone with half a brain knows that unless we raise the debt ceiling right now we're going to be up Merde Creek without a paddle. The prospect of not doing that is a very real crisis.

But that is different than the longer range effort to get deficits under control. It IS a trumped up phony crisis to say we have to go along with the GOP and put long-term draconian budget cuts and other straightjackets and take money out of SS and Medicare in connection with the current debt-ceiling.

The debt ceiling could be raised tomorrow with a quick voite and a stroke of the pen and that phony crisis would be over. That is a wholly separate issue than the phony linkage with the long term budget policies that the GOP and Obama are insisting on.

When someone calls you a stupid motherf*cker. and everyone in your group stupid motherf*ckers .. you better know they do not have anything more then contempt for you. People who are contemptuous of you will do you harm and not feel one ounce of guilt about it.

43. Okay? People can type 'rec' without an explanation of any sort
and that's okay but somehow the folks who unrec have to provide a detailed thesis (complete with bulletpoints and graphics, I'm guessing) why.

Is this a new DU rule? I don't think the admins have that much time on their hands to come up with something that stupid.

Maybe Jane should be careful what she wishes for.
