1. Was that a speech? I thought it was a recap.
On the last episode of Endless Back-and-Forth Bullshit....

5. Indeed ... what does Obama want?
At this late hour, what does Obama want?

Will he veto the Boehner plan?

Will he sign the Reid/Pat Buchanan plan?

Yup, we know Pres. Obama wants to be responsible ... but from the speech tonight, what exactly is it that he wants for raising the debt ceiling?

7. He wants people to know this is serious and to call their congresscritters.
To tell them to compromise rather than automatically blocking anything he or a Dem might ask for.

13. I will NOT call my Congresswoman to compromise
she's a Democrat and she better stand firm and give NOTHING up on SS/Medicare.

15. Perhaps I did not make myself clear. If she's a Dem, then why would she be
"automatically blocking anything he or a Dem might ask for."?

22. He wants the most vulnerable American People to suffer
more than the people like him.

Otherwise, he would have said there's a third option--Grijalva would be more than happy, I'm sure, to send him the People's Budget again.

But that doesn't hurt poor and working class Americans enough, so yeah, let's go with the Grand Bargain.

3. I would rate a good speech aimed at those whose are not paying much, if any attention to this crisis
I lived through the Cuban Missile Crisis. I have to say that this is being to feel like a financial version of that time.
Two sides standing recalcitrantly as the world edges closer to the cliff. Someone has to back off or we all go down.

Obama did an effective job of laying out the stakes without creating a panic.

If this crisis continues, I would expect him to be back with even more dire warnings. See this as the next installment
with more to come as he ups the pressure on the teabaggers.

4. I voted "okay." Telling me I should tell C.W. "Bill" Young what I
think is about the same as telling me to piss up a rope.

I suspect that all hears are from like minded idiots. IT's time he hears from those who disapprove.

They need to hear from us. My congressman is a RW a-hole as well but he's going to hear from me.

23. Pride has got nothing to do with it. Nothing new was said.
What does my watching the speech have anything to do with anything? It's my choice. I vote and I support Democrats.

What helped to elect Republicans last year was Democrats choosing not to vote, not Democrats choosing not to listen to the President's speeches.

9. If enough people call Congress
and voice their approval for Obama's approach over the GOPs then the speech was a success. We shall see.

People other than teabaggers have to start making their voices heard.

He really didn't ask for this before now that I remember.

12. I thought he did a good job

He showed a hell of a lot more class in his speech than Boner who seemed like a parody of a right wing pundit.

Obama has let me down since becoming pres, but I do really see him picking up the line that goes around here a lot to pushback on the rhetoric of the GOP and create a rhetorical line for dems.

I also liked that he used "middle class" in the speech. Something that Clinton did a lot but Obama has NOT done often enough.

The Dems have got to let people know what is at stake and who the GOP is working for. Nothing new for us here but it's refreshing to hear him calling out the GOP for defending the rich on national tv.

14. The speech was fine
I could nitpick (as usual), but the speech was fine for promoting our side and our policy preferences.

I do feel like if he has approached the presidency in this manner, the whole landscape of this nation's politics would look much nicer by now. But the speech itself was fine in my opinion.

17. The call to action was not in the pre-release transcript

...which I find interesting.

Didn't get to see the speech, so I read the first transcript posted.

There was no warning to the networks - i.e. Fox - that he was going to ask people to contact their reps, so I wonder if their messaging didn't anticipate that.

I'll have to check cspan for other variations on the pre-release text.

It reads quite well, though.

27. Question is meaningless?
How do you define a good speech - are the criteria based upon substance, eloquence or the method/style of presentation?
