There is no us in US. It's case sensitive.
When people sense that things are getting worse, lots of them will say
just let me have all my stuff and leave me the fuck alone. I don't care about the decline of infrastructure, I don't care about the global warming, etc. - I don't believe you are going to do anything for ME. I don't believe you CAN do anything. Therefore I do not want to pay any taxes. (this is a sentiment the Democratic Party has run up against and, through decades of neglect of its Labor roots, helped to seed among young white working class voters,
who as some article posted the other day informed us, have been turning back to the Republicans lately as the economy has languished.) People who are facing diminishing prospects tend to get more selfish and pessimistic. This is a phenomenon you may also have noticed in has-been entertainment and sports stars. They aren't making much income the way they used to, and so they start screaming about every penny they pay in tax, like Republican tax holidays will restore them to their former rockstar lifestyles.
Rich people, by definition almost, are very ME focused. They KNOW they do not share a common destiny with the rest of us, and they have no desire to change their thinking about that. But rich people do not elect Republicans. They are not numerous enough to elect anyone to anything, beyond the Treasurer of their Country Club. They pay for the election of Republicans. Stupid middle class and poor people do the actual voting for Republicans.
Why don't non-rich Republicans understand that taxes have to be raised on the rich? Because some of them don't believe Democrats have anything to offer them; they have little and don't want taxes going up on anyone. If taxes go up on anyone, they reckon, like always, taxes will go up on ME. They are scared and pessimistic about the future. Others aren't poor, but they dream of joining the truly rich in severing themselves entirely and forever from the fate of the US and from all the dirty poor people who have been crammed in here. They aren't so pessimistic about the future, they think they are going places. They just refuse to include anyone else in their thinking besides themselves.
