Sometimes even the adult in the room needs to assert himself.

This is clearly one of those times.President Obama will be a one term president if he presides over a downgrade in the US credit rating and/or allows social security checks to be cut off. If by Tuesday the Congress has not raised the debt ceiling in accord with Reid's plan, he needs to cite the 14th amendment, or the inherent powers of the president in times of emergency and authorize the borrowing to continue and the checks to be sent out.
If the lunatics in the House impeach him so be it.This is a fight that needs to be fought and needs to be won.

2. The more interesting question will be what CNN polls on the

subject say a year from now. If there is a default, the economic consequences to everyone will likely be so severe that, by this time next year people will be talking about the 'Obama-caused Depression because he didn't compromise'. One term.
