I Thought Obama said there had to be tax increases for the rich by shutting down some of their tax
loop holes.

Eleven words come to mind. If you don't stand for anything, you will fall for anything.

I seriously feel betrayed by this. I really don't know the difference anymore.

1. The Bush tax cuts are still set to expire. That will mean much more money, anyway. n/t

3. Since even Grover Norquist has indicated that letting those taxes expire
won't be equivalent to an actual tax increase, that could provide enough cover for some Republicans not to object.

6. In other words, Obama will extend the Bush/Obama tax cuts yet again

Hint: Norquist changed his mind the very next day. Nice try, though.

Grover Norquist Clarifies Anti-Tax Increase Position

First Posted: 7/22/11 09:10 AM ET Updated: 7/22/11 10:45 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Voting to end the Bush tax cuts would be considered a tax hike and a violation of a pledge to Americans for Tax Reform, organization president and Republican Party-influencer Grover Norquist wrote in a Friday http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/22/opinion/22Norquist.html?_r=2&hp">New York Times op-ed.

Norquist caused a stir on Thursday with his statements to the Washington Post editorial board, whom he told that letting the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy expire -- as they are set to do in December 2012 -- would not be seen as a violation of Americans for Tax Reform's anti-tax pledge.

But Norquist flatly rejected the idea that his statement would give Republicans, nearly all of whom have signed the pledge, breathing room to end the tax cuts as part of a deficit-reduction deal for increasing the debt limit. Democrats are pushing for a deal to raise the debt ceiling to include an end to some of the Bush tax cuts, which have temporarily reduced the tax rate for most income levels, or other revenue-raisers to mitigate heavy spending cuts.

Voting to raise taxes in any way -- including by ending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy instead of letting them expire on their own -- is a violation of the pledge, he wrote in The New York Times, comparing paying taxes to being mugged.

7. And why do we want the GOP to have cover for anything they do again? (nt)

10. That's the worst part of this deal
It allows the Republicans to maintain that it's never okay to raise taxes.

11. Because, unless we give Dems a supermajority of 60 Senate votes,
and a majority in the House as well, we're going to need GOP votes.

16. Then maybe we should focus on winning the next election like they are doing, instead
of working to help them beat us in the next election by helping to provide their cover.

15. I'm sure they'll end this time if you clap hard enough!
I mean, it's not like the Republicans have learned the value of taking hostages or anything.

17. We all know that the GOP will scream about Obama raising taxes in an election year
and then he will capitulate and extend them

9. You're Surprised?? Obama is terrified of angering Repubz, we all know that.
When he suggested the idea of tax increases on the rich/elimation of the loop holes i had already written it off as never going to happen.
