Most people still don't get why Republicans are obsessed with defeating Obama
Edited on Wed Aug-03-11 08:53 PM by Tony_FLADEM
I was watching Hardball today and they were going over the reasons Republicans don't like Obama.

There is nothing inconsistent going on today as it relates to Obama.

It's very simple. The right wing always has to find something to use against Democratic Presidents.

Jimmy Carter had good character and small budget deficits BUT he was "weak" on foreign policy.

Bill Clinton balanced the budget and had good foreign policy BUT had "bad character."

Barack Obama has good character and an adequate foreign policy BUT there are budget deficits.

Obama isn't a womanizer or a wimp so he must be a socialist.

If Barack Obama had character flaws there never would have been this default crisis. There would have been something else to use against him.

I'm surprised no one has figured this out.

2. It's not racial. Not to the extent you think
Obama doesn't have weaknesses that previous Democratic Presidents have had. So the attacks on him are more psycho. For example, he wasn't born in this country.

11. I think they are more disturbed by the fact that his mother was white
than that his father was black. They are uncomfortable with that as it makes pigeonholing him difficult. They like everything black or white but not shades of gray. Gray is undefined.

10. Yes, it's racial. The 'birthers and 'baggers are all about that.
The attack is to make him seem like the exotic, non-American "other" who's more comfortable with his terrorist brethren.

Look at all the local Republican officials caught displaying or circulating racist materials since his campaign.

It's racial. They have to put a less offensive face on it.

The President has crashed the Washington Good Ol' Boy club and they want him out.

4. Sorry but there's a whole new level of hatred aimed at Obama
because he's black. Nobody took fucking guns to the rallies and meetings held by those other Dem presidents. Pat fucking Buchanan gleefully called him boy and talked of nailing the coonskin to the wall.

Maybe you don't have teaparty relatives. I do. Their virulent hatred is truly frightening. one sibling consistently sends me racist emails about Obama. Hat is in addition to the hate they have for Dem policies. And you're wrong if you think they don't make shit up about his marriage because they do.

There is a former co-worker DM that got fired a few years ago for sending a racially offensive e-mail, She is a super Tea partier that sends nasty ones about Obama and Democrats. And to prove she is not a racist, she says she supports Herman Cain for President!

Even non-political junkies are taking notice of the blatant disrespect towards Obama.

18. No, No, NO.
It's primarily because the GOPigs and their corpo-rat funders, masters and cronies have consistently blanketed the airwaves and therefore the public consciousness with repetition after repetition, including, but not limited to exploiting the lizard brain of fearful people and the easily led with bait, including general fear for survival, fear of difference, fear of attack, fear of threats to reproduction. Lizard brain (the most basic) fears.

It's because cancervative operatives/controllers decided to feed this toxic mix to their willing/scared audience.

I never thought gay marriage would be an option in my lifetime--but it was repigs (actually Sun Myung Moon and his Moonies) who brought up the idea in the first place.

20. There is one more effect to consider
The nation comes off of a nasty, horrid, rotten economic ride with a Rep president. It's only natural that they don't want any other Party to be observed as being or having the ability to actually lead the nation well. It's imperative that the Reps immediately get rid of any Dem President and reinstall another Rep to prolong the national observation that the nasty, horrid, rotten economic ride is the norm.

23. I think that you have a very good point--Democratic Presidents will not be tolerated!
Being old enough to remember the right wing outrage against Carter and Clinton, this comes as nothing new. No matter how much of a corporatist the President may appear to people like me, no matter how much he may hand Big Business everything they want and more, the right wing will see him as an enemy, a commie, pinko, socialist, wimp (Carter), draft dodger (Clinton), Muslim (Obama)who will destroy this country.

The truth is that they from time to time the Powers That Be need a Democrat to clean up the mess that Republicans made. The Bush years were a big trip to the trough for the Powers That Be. Obama has been given the impossible task of setting things more or less right so a future GOP administration can open up new floodgates to continue the transfer the wealth of this nation into their hands. Needless to say the Republicans will do anything in their power to make sure he doesn't do anything positive during his term in office.

As unhappy as I am with Obama's performance in dealing with the Republicans, I still will support the man. I personally blame myself for Ronald Reagan. I voted third party (for a lovely environmentalist name Barry Commoner) in 1980 since in my opinion Carter was a complete and utter sell out. Since then I've held my nose and voted for and even worked for the Democrat and will continue to do so until I see a progressive-populist third party candidate who can actually win. Since that's not going to happen, I'll be supporting Obama, though I'll admit he's not making that easy.

But, be it Howard Dean, John Kerry, Al Gore, Bill or Hillary Clinton, they cook up SOME kind of grand meme to demonize them over.

25. Agree with you that they would find a flaw and focus on it, but there still would have been a
default crisis.

The problem is that there are two competing ideologies in this country. The Republicans, at their roots, are for a small government, that does little and asks little in the way of taxes. Democrats see government as something potentially good and necessary. The Democrats think the government should design and enforce regulations; at their extreme, the Republicans reject almost all regulations. The Democrats think the government should create a safety net that prevents people from abject poverty - the Republicans don't think the government should have that responsibility and argue that charities will take care of that.

One problem Democrats have had is that the Republicans have an easier time coming up with simplistic slogans and soundbites. The Democratic positions are more complex. Somehow, Democrats need to make people see that it was earlier Democrats who fought for the programs that most of the middle class knows are necessary to their own lives - and the republicans, whatever they say, are philosophically against them.
